HIGHLANDERS FALL AT NO. 19 VIRGINIA TECH

BLACKSBURG, Va. – A six run first inning by No. 19 Virginia Tech was the downfall of the Radford softball team in an 8-0 five inning loss on Wednesday night at Tech Softball Park.

Radford made some noise in the first inning but couldn't take advantage with the bases loaded and two outs. Hannah Medlam singled through the left side with one out before advancing to second thanks to a Destiny Freeman walk. A strikeout was the second out of the inning but was followed by another walk that loaded the bases. However, the second strikeout of the inning ended the threat with the bases full for Radford.

The top of the first inning could have been huge for the Highlanders as Virginia Tech scored six runs on six hits highlighted by a Kelsey Bennett grand slam.

Hannah Morris entered in the first inning with a pair of runners on base and two outs. She gave up a double that scored the sixth run of the first inning but got out of the jam as the almost seventh run of the inning was thrown out at the plate on a 9-3-2 putout.

Radford only got one hit through the second and third innings and it came from Big South Freshman of the Week Destiny Freeman. In the meantime, Morris pitched a couple of scoreless frames in the home half of the two innings.

It was another good scoring chance for the Highlanders in the fourth inning as Hunter Mundy and Maggie Rowe reached with a hit and a fielder's choice, respectively, with one out. Maddie Banks, the Hokie second baseman, made the final two outs of the inning and left Mundy and Rowe stranded.

Jayme Bailey put the eight-run rule into effect with a two-run home run to straightaway centerfield in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sydney Fisher and Hannah Medlam extended the game with a pair of hits to lead off the fifth inning. Then a strikeout, a fielder's choice and a groundout ended the game in five innings.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford was only able to get a runner to third base twice and they came in the first and final innings of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The 1-2-3 hitters for Radford had four of the five hits, while Mundy had the other. Medlam went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Freeman went 1-for-2 with a walk. Morris pitched 3.1 innings with only two runs allowed. Virginia Tech starter Carrie Eberle (17-1) pitched a complete game with five hits allowed and six strikeouts.
