HUFFMAN’S STRONG PERFORMANCE CARRIES RADFORD TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF PRESBYTERIAN

RADFORD, Va. – Kayla Huffman pitched a combined 9.1 innings with only two runs allowed and carried the Radford softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Presbyterian, 4-2 and 4-3 on Saturday at Radford Softball Stadium.

GAME ONE
Huffman carried the Highlanders in the first game of the day with her 10th complete game of the season where she recorded eight strikeouts on just 89 pitches. The King William, Va., native had her stuff working well in the early going as six of her eight strikeouts came in the first three innings.

Radford scored a run on the first hit of the day as Hannah Medlam drove in Sydney Fisher for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Then Fisher turned around and drove in a run of her own in the second inning when she plated Maggie Rowe, who reached with a leadoff single.

On the other side of the ball, Huffman had a perfect game through 3.0 innings until Jonnie Petree opened the fourth inning with a single to left field. She moved to third on an Ansley Wilbanks double down the left field line. The two players scored on the next two at-bats and tied the game at two.

The game was in a standstill at two until Mundy gave Radford the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run no doubt home run to left field. Her sixth bomb of the season plated pinch-runner Callie Morgan and gave the Highlanders a 4-2 lead.

Huffman came in to close out the game in the seventh inning. She fittingly picked up her sixth win of the season with her eighth and final strikeout of the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Rowe led all players with two hits, while Mundy led all players with two RBIs. Fisher and Medlam also added an RBI of their own. Huffman threw 89 pitches and only faced 24 batters.

STAT OF THE GAME
Huffman didn't allow a walk and had six scoreless innings where she also sat the Blue Hose in order.

TWEET OF THE GAME

GAME TWO
Game two of the day saw a lot more drama as no Highlander was able to pick up a multi-hit game. However, Radford struck first offensively with a three-run third inning.

The third inning saw Hannah Morris reach base with a one-out walk. Then pinch-runner Callie Morgan moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. The wild pitch proved to be a costly one as Sydney Fisher powered a 2-1 pitch into the left center field gap and scored Morgan.

Fisher came around to score on the ensuing play after moving to third on an infield hit and scoring on a throwing error by the Blue Hose shortstop. That extended the Highlander lead to 2-0. Talia Douglas gave Radford its third run of the inning after she drove in Hannah Medlam from third with a single through the left side.

Radford got into trouble in the fifth inning when a pair of one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases for Kiley Kross. The PC shortstop singled through the left side and scored two. That cut the Radford lead to 3-2. The next batter Casey Gehard tied the game with an RBI single.

A walk loaded the bases with one out, but relief pitcher Morris was able to get a foul out to Medlam in left field for a crucial second out. Then Radford made another pitching change and brought in Kayla Huffman. Alyssa Batastini swung at Huffman's first pitch and it went high into the sky but found its way to Douglas' glove for the final out of the inning.

Radford went down in order in the fifth inning but had something brewing in the sixth as Tapia reached on an error and Mundy doubled down the left field line. That put both runners in scoring position with one out with Maggie Rowe at the plate.

Rowe fouled off the first pitch she saw, which gave the indication that she was swinging for the fences. Tapia took off running towards home on the second pitch of the at-bat and Rowe laid down a bunt to the first base side. The only play was to get Rowe at first base as Tapia slid in safely at home for Radford's fourth run of the game.

The go-ahead run gave Radford a 4-3 lead, which remained intact as Huffman got a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh. She picked up her second win of the day and seventh win of the season.

STAT OF THE GAME
Hope Creasy picked up her 50th win as Radford's head coach with the 4-3 victory over Presbyterian. It only took her 88 games to pick up the win and she has a .568 winning percentage at Radford.
