MUNDY POWERS HIGHLANDERS TO GAME TWO VICTORY AGAINST PRESBYTERIAN

Clinton, SC – The Radford baseball team broke a 2-2 tie with seven runs over the final two innings to pull out a 9-3 victory, in the second-game of Saturday's Big South doubleheader with Presbyterian at PC Baseball Complex.  The Highlanders dropped the opener by a score of 7-1 against the Blue Hose.

Designated hitter J.D. Mundy drilled a grand slam and went 2-for-5 with five RBI to power the Radford bats in the nightcap. Second baseman Kyle Butler went 2-for-5 with an RBI and first baseman Spencer Horwitz scored three times and blasted his third homer of the campaign.

The Highlanders got on the board in the third inning as Butler singled to left center to plate center fielder Carlin Christian, who had reached on an error.

Horwitz laced his third round tripper to center to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage in the top of the sixth.

The Blue Hose evened the score in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-out rally.  Pinch hitter Ashby Smith doubled to left to drive in right fielder Nick Gumbarda and second baseman Rob Greco followed with an RBI single.

Radford, however, bounced right back in the top of the eighth inning. Horwitz led-off with a walk and Mundy delivered a one-out RBI single and advanced to second on an error. Mundy later came around to score after third baseman Matt Roth reached on an error by shortstop Luke Matthews.

The Highlanders put the game out of reach with five runs on three hits and two walks in the top of the ninth.  Butler doubled to right center to drive in Christian, who singled up the middle with one-out.  Horwitz and right fielder Andrew Szamski then drew walks to load the bases for Mundy. The Virginia Tech transfer launched his first career Highlander grand slam off reliever Grayson Stoneking, his third homer of the season.

Reliever Cameron Fritz (1-1) came out of the bullpen to pick up the victory. Fritz allowed a run on four hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Starter Derek Domecq (4 walks, 3 K's) did not allow a run or a hit in his 3.1 innings of work.  Austin Gerber was effective in relief of Domecq as he allowed three hits and two runs over his 3.1 innings.

Radford managed just three hits in the opener as the Blue Hose broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Left-hander Zack Ridgely (1-1) took the loss as he allowed four earned runs on five hits over six innings. Ridgely, who threw 74 pitches, fanned six batters and walked just one.

Butler went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk while left fielder Adam Whitacre recorded the other Highlander hit.

Eric Miles struck out nine Highlanders in 6.1 innings and improved to 2-1 for the hosts.
