HIGHLANDERS EDGED 1-0 BY PRESBYTERIAN IN RUBBER GAME; DUNN TURNS IN STRONG OUTING

Clinton, S.C. – Freshman right-hander Cole Dunn fired five scoreless innings, however, the Radford baseball team was edged by a score of 1-0, in the rubber game of a three-game series against the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Sunday afternoon.

Dunn scattered five hits, fanned two and did not walk a batter as he tossed 70 pitches for a no-decision.

Center fielder Kyle Butler, right fielder Andrew Szamski and catcher Straton Podaras all had one hit as the Highlanders only had six base runners in the contest. Radford struck out a season-high 17 times on the day.

The hosts scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Reliever Bruce Hudson (0-1) came on for Dunn and plunked second baseman Jonathan White with one man out. Designated hitter Jimmy Marcelli then singled up the middle to advance White over to third. Hudson was able to fan left fielder Andrew Livingston, however, he unloaded a wild pitch with center fielder Zacchaeus Rasberry at the plate for the lone run of the afternoon.

The Highlanders (6-13, 1-2 Big South) had two scoring chances in the contest but could not get on the board.  Left fielder Carlin Christian drew a one out walk in the top of the sixth but was thrown out by Blue Hose catcher Michael Varga trying to steal. Center fielder Kyle Butler then singled and first baseman Spencer Horwitz followed with a walk to put runners on first and second.  However, right fielder Andrew Szamski popped up to third to end the threat.

Pinch hitter Jimmy Goldsmith was hit by a pitch with one out in the eighth inning and was replaced by pinch runner David Bryant. Bryant was also caught stealing by Varga with Christian at the dish. Christian then drew a walk but he was gunned down again on an attempted steal to end the frame, the third caught stealing by Varga.

Presbyterian's (8-12, 2-1 Big South) Reagan Fowler (1-3) allowed just two hits and fanned 12 in six innings to gain the victory.  Colton Springs (3.0 inn.) came on for his third save as he fanned five Highlanders.

Radford will travel to VMI on Tuesday evening.
