NARDI FIRES SIX SCORELESS INNINGS IN RELIEF AS HIGHLANDERS PULL AWAY FROM VMI, 14-5

MUNDY, SZAMSKI & HORWITZ ENJOY BIG OFFENSIVE DAY

Lexington, Va. – Southpaw Andrew Nardi tossed six scoreless innings in relief and designated hitter J.D. Mundy drove in three runs, as the Radford baseball team picked up a non-conference victory against the VMI Keydets on Tuesday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Nardi, who has not allowed a run in his last 15.1 innings of work, came on in the second inning and shut the door on the hosts after they scored four times in the opening frame.  Nardi (2-0) scattered four hits, did not allow a walk and fanned four batters. The Morganville, New Jersey native got eight fly balls, four ground outs and threw just 56 pitches.

Mundy went 2-for-4, doubled and smacked a three-run homer to pace the offense. Right fielder Andrew Szamski went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI and first baseman Spencer Horwitz was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three walks. Second baseman David Bryant went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs.

Mundy launched his fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot over the right center field wall in the top of the first inning.

However, the hosts responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame off Highlander starter Brandon Donovan. The Keydets (4-15) recorded six hits, including a two-run single by designated hitter Nathan Lloyd.

The Highlanders evened the game in the top of the third after Horwitz led off with a double to left center.  After Szamski popped up, Mundy, catcher Will Harless and left fielder Adam Whitacre (RBI) all walked.

Radford (7-13) took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Szamski drilled a a two-run double down the left field line to plate center fielder Kyle Butler (HBP) and third baseman Clayton Baine (walk).

The Highlanders broke the contest open with seven runs on six hits in the top of the eighth inning. Horwitz had an RBI single for the first run. Catcher Straton Podaras then smacked a two-run double to right center. Baine (single) and Bryant (double) produced two-run hits in back-to-back at bats to end the frame.

Pinch hitter Jimmy Goldsmith added an RBI single to score Horwitz (walk) in the top of the ninth.

Radford will travel to Big South rival Charleston Southern for a three-game series beginning on Friday afternoon.
