HIGHLANDERS OUTLAST CHARLESTON SOUTHERN IN 11 INNINGS TO GAIN KEY EARLY-SEASON BIG SOUTH VICTORY

Charleston, SC – Senior third baseman Matt Roth homered and drove in the game-winning run to help lead the Radford baseball team to an extra-inning victory against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, in the opening game of a three-game series at Nielsen Field on Friday evening. Radford improved to 8-13 overall and 2-2 in the Big South Conference.

Cameron Fritz continued his terrific work out of the Highlander bullpen as the senior pitched four scoreless frames to pick up his second victory of the season. The right-hander whiffed eight Buc batters, did not walk a batter and allowed just three hits.

Starter, senior left-hander Zack Ridgely, was terrific as he did not allow an earned run in six innings for a no-decision. Ridgely no-hit the hosts for the first five innings before surrendering three unearned runs in the sixth inning.

Roth (2-for-4, BB), shortstop Colby Higgerson (2-for-4, run) and first baseman Spencer Horwitz (HR, 2 RBI) paced the Radford offense.

Both starters, Ridgely and CSU's Jaret Bennett, did not allow a hit until the Highlanders finally broke through in the top of the sixth inning.  Higgerson singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  Center fielder Kyle Butler failed to advance Higgerson with a sacrifice bunt attempt, however, Horwitz homered to right on a 2-0 count to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. It was his fourth round-tripper of the season.

Charleston Southern (8-16, 0-4 Big South) answered right back with three unearned runs in the sixth off Ridgely. The Highlanders committed two errors and Ridgely walked and hit a batter.  Left fielder Dante Blakeney recorded a two-run single up the middle and second baseman Jason Miller singled to right center with two outs for the equalizer.

Roth connected on his fourth homer to left center, a two-run shot, with one-out on a 2-2 count to restore a 5-3 lead for the Highlanders. Catcher Straton Podaras scored after opening the frame with a single.

Yet again, the Bucs came right back to even the game in the bottom of the frame with two runs on three hits off reliever Austin Gerber. Asbill touched up Gerber for a two-run home run to right to even the contest.

Fritz came on in the bottom of the eighth and slammed the door shut on the hosts.

Neither team created much offense until Radford broke through in the 11th. Designated hitter J.D. Mundy singled to right to lead-off and Carlin Christian came off the bench to pinch run. Left fielder Adam Whitacre followed with an infield single to put runners on first and second. Podaras popped up and second baseman Clayton Baine went down looking to set the stage for Roth. The Chesapeake, Virginia native came up big with a single to left on an 0-1 count to score Christian with the game-winner.

Charleston Southern got the lead-off batter, Miller, on in the 11thbut Fritz picked him off to get the first out.  Fritz then struck out first baseman Sam Trend-Beacom and catcher Brooks Bryan Flied out to right fielder Andy Szamski for the final out of the contest.

Radford will continue their series with the Bucs at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
