HIGHLANDERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT; DEFEAT CHARLESTON SOUTHERN AFTER FOUR-RUN FIRST INNING

Charleston, South Carolina – The Radford baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at Nielsen Field. The Highlanders, who have won three straight, improved to 9-13 overall and 3-2 in the Big South Conference.

Designated hitter J.D. Mundy connected on a 2-2 pitch with one out in the first inning, a three-run shot over the right center field wall to highlight the Highlanders' big first frame. It was his team-leading sixth round tripper of the season and scored first baseman Spencer Horwitz (single) and right fielder Andrew Szamski (single).

Left fielder Adam Whitacre followed Mundy with a homer to right center, his fifth of the season.

CSU (8-17, 0-5 BSC) first baseman Sam Trend-Beacom got one run back for the hosts in the bottom of the fourth as he took starter Derek Domecq deep for the only run he would allow in 3.1 innings of work. Domecq allowed two hits, walked one and fanned three batters.

Radford added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning without getting a base hit.  Pinch hitter Jimmy Goldsmith produced an RBI sacrifice fly and center fielder Carlin Christian added an RBI sac bunt.

The Highlanders added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Szamski singled up the middle to score center fielder Kyle Butler.

Right-handed reliever Bruce Hudson picked up his first career victory as he allowed just a hit and did not walk a batter in 3.2 innings of work.  Right-hander Graham Firoved came on in the eighth and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the contest.

Radford will conclude their series with CSU on Sunday at 1pm.
