RADFORD ROUNDUP: MARCH 19-21



RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Tuesday, March 18th through Thursday, March 21st.


 
 BASEBALL
 

at VMI - Tuesday, March 19 at 4 p.m.
Where: Lexington, Va.

  • Radford will return to action after dropping two of three contests at Big South rival Presbyterian over the weekend.
  • The Highlanders broke a 2-2 tie with seven runs over the final two innings to pull out a 9-3 victory in the second-game of Saturday's doubleheader with Presbyterian at PC Baseball Complex.   
  • Designated hitter J.D. Mundy drilled a grand slam and went 2-for-5 with five RBI to power the Radford bats in the nightcap. Second baseman Kyle Butler went 2-for-5 with an RBI and first baseman Spencer Horwitz scored three times and blasted his third homer of the campaign.
  • Radford managed just three hits in the opener as the Blue Hose broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Left-hander Zack Ridgely (1-1) took the loss as he allowed four earned runs on five hits over six innings. Ridgely, who threw 74 pitches, fanned six batters and walked just one.
  • Butler went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk while left fielder Adam Whitacre recorded the other Highlander hit.
  • Freshman right-hander Cole Dunn fired five scoreless innings in the rubber game of the three-game series against the Blue Hose on Sunday afternoon. Dunn scattered five hits, fanned two and did not walk a batter as he tossed 70 pitches for a no-decision.
  • Whitacre leads the Highlanders in batting (.388), home runs (4) and slugging (.735).
  • VMI dropped two of three against Lehigh in Lexington this past weekend.
  • DH Noah Cook and outfielder Cody Warner each drove in two runs in the Keydets 11-1 victory on Sunday.
  • Jake Huggins is batting a team-high .333 with three homers and 17 RBI.

 
 MEN'S TENNIS
 

vs. Longwood - Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Radford Tennis Courts)
Records: Radford (9-2, 1-0 Big South) | Longwood (8-3, 1-0 Big South)
  • The Highlanders had a grueling schedule for spring break with four matches in five days.
  • Nonetheless, the Highlanders came out with a 3-1 record with its only loss coming to College of Charleston.
  • Yevhen Sirous went 3-1 in singles and 4-0 in No. 1 doubles, while Alexandros Caldwell had a perfect 4-0 record in the singles competition.
  • Longwood enters with an 8-3 record with losses to George Washington, Georgetown and James Madison. They defeated Winthrop, 4-3, on Sunday.
 
 WOMEN'S TENNIS
 

vs. Longwood - Wednesday, March 20 at 2 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Radford Tennis Courts)
Records: Radford (7-5, 2-1 Big South) | Longwood (8-3, 0-1 Big South)
  • Radford flew out west for spring break and competed in the Golden State for a pair of matches.
  • The Highlanders split in its two matches with a win against Chapman and a loss to Cal State Northridge.
  • Drousile Dzeubou and Anastasia Belyaeva were the only Highlanders that won both their singles matches. Dzeubou is 10-2 this season, while Belyaeva is 8-4.
  • Longwood is 8-3 with losses to Georgetown, N.C. Central and Winthrop.
 
 SOFTBALL
 

vs. Norfolk State - Wednesday, March 20 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. (DH)
Where: Radford, Va. (Radford Softball Stadium)

  • The Highlanders return to Radford Softball Stadium for a pair of games on Wednesday against Norfolk State.
  • Radford dropped its opening Big South series against Charleston Southern, but looks to rebound this week.
  • Sydney Fisher continues her hot hitting at the plate with a .419 batting average and 36 hits. The sophomore has a 1.014 on base plus slugging percentage.
  • Junior pitcher Sarah Smith has not allowed a run or a walk in her last two outings. She has just allowed four hits in her last 3.2 innings pitched.
  • Norfolk State is on a hot streak winning its last five games. The Spartans outscored their opponents 26-6 over that span.
  • Shelby DesChamps has a .437 batting average with 31 hits and 22 runs scored, all lead the team.
  • Tuli Iosefa and Kylee Lopez are on each other's heels with 35 combined RBIs. Lopez has accounted for 18, while Iosefa has 17.
