HIGHLANDERS EDGED BY UAB IN OPENING GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER, 11-8

Birmingham, Alabama - - - The Radford baseball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader, 11-8, against the UAB Blazers on Saturday evening at Young Memorial Field. The Highlanders fell to 3-6 while the Blazers improved to 8-3.
 
Left fielder Adam Whitacre went 2-for-3, walked and hit his second home run of the season to lead the Highlander offense.  Center fielder Kyle Butler and first baseman Spencer Horwitz both drove in a pair of runs and third baseman Matt Roth scored twice and drove in a run.
 
Left-hander Derek Domecq suffered his first career loss, allowing six earned runs on seven hits in just 2.2 innings of work.  Right-hander Bruce Hudson (2.1 inn., 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 strikeouts) and right-hander Brandon Feathers (3.0 inn., 4 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 strikeouts) worked out of the bullpen.
 
Radford jumped out to a 4-0 lead as they scored four times in the bottom of the second inning.  Shortstop Colby Higgerson singled home J.D. Mundy and last night's hero, Roth, singled up the middle to plate Higgerson.  Center fielder Kyle Butler doubled down the left field line to score second baseman David Bryant and Roth for two more runs.
 
The hosts answered back with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Blake Johnson produced a 3-run double to highlight the Blazer inning.
 
UAB tacked on two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-4. Left fielder Colton Schultz homered to right field and right fielder Zack Davis added an infield single to score first baseman Carter Pharis.
 
The Highlanders got right back into the contest as they managed to score three times in the top of the seventh to close within 8-7.  Roth scored on a wild pitch and then Horwitz drove in two with a single to right center, plating Butler and catcher Will Harless.

 
The Blazers got two insurance runs back in the bottom of the seventh as Johnson and center fielder Jess Davis came through with RBI singles.
 
Whitacre smacked a solo homer in the eight to bring the Highlanders within 10-8 before the hosts added the final run of the game in the bottom of the frame.
 
Davis went 4-for-5 to lead UAB and Johnson drove in a game-high four runs.
