HIGHLANDERS EDGED BY HARVARD, 7-6

Radford, Va. - - - The Radford baseball team dropped a tough 7-6 decision against the Harvard Crimson, in the home opener for the Highlanders on Friday night at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Third baseman Matt Roth drilled a two-run homer to lead the Highlander offense, while first baseman Spencer Horwitz, left fielder Adam Whitacre and second baseman David Bryant each had a couple of hits.

Right-handed reliever Cody Boone suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed four hits and two earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.  Left-hander Zack Ridgely tossed the first five innings and allowed two earned runs and seven hits.

The Highlanders (3-8) led 5-3 after four innings but the Crimson scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on for the victory.

The visitors got on the board first in the top of the first as right fielder Jake Suddleson singled to left to plate first baseman Patrick McColl (3-for-5).

Radford answered back with three runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 3-1 advantage.  Left fielder Adam Whitacre double to right center to plate catcher Straton Podaras and then Roth blasted a two-run homer to left field, his third bomb of the season.

Harvard (3-2) scored twice in the top of the third to get even. Suddleson drove in a run with a double and then came around to score after a pair of Highlander errors.

The Highlanders regained the lead with a run in the third and another in the fourth.  Podaras drove in right fielder Andrew Szamski with an infield single and first baseman Spencer Horwitz singled in second baseman David Bryant for Radford's fifth run.

The Crimson moved ahead for good with four runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Center fielder Ben Skinner hit a two-run triple to right field and then came around to score on an error by shortstop Colby Higgerson.  Higgerson then made another miscue, allowing second baseman Quinn Hoffman to score Harvard's seventh run.

Radford cut the deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh as Horwitz tripled to center field and came around to score when shortstop Chad Minato threw away the relay attempt at third base.

The Highlanders were unable to do much damage off relievers Enzo Stefanoni and Kieran Shaw in the late innings.  Stefanoni picked up the win as he allowed just one run in 3.0 innings and Shaw picked up his second save after a perfect ninth inning appearance.

Radford and Harvard will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
