HIGHLANDERS DROP BOTH GAMES OF A DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST HARVARD ON SATURDAY

Radford, Va. - - - The Radford baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Harvard Crimson, 5-4 and 9-2, on Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.  The Highlanders fell to 3-10 while Harvard improved to 5-2.

Harvard scored three times in their final at bat to record a come-from-behind victory in the opener. Highlander designated hitter J.D. Mundy, left fielder Adam Whitacre and third baseman Matt Roth all recorded a pair of hits and an RBI.

Right-hander Brandon Donovan (0-2) took the loss as he allowed three earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Right-handed starter Graham Firoved allowed just an earned run in 3.0 innings in his first career start.

The Highlanders led 3-0 after the first two innings as Mundy doubled to left center to score right fielder Andrew Szamski to get Radford on the board. Roth delivered an RBI single to score shortstop Colby Higgerson, who had reached on a bunt single and then swiped second base. Szamski drew a bases loaded walk to score Roth with Radford's third run.

Harvard got a run back in the third on an RBI double by first baseman Patrick McColl and then McColl belted a homer to right field in the top of the fifth to make it 3-2.

Whitacre led off the bottom of the fifth with his third homer of the season to widen the lead to 4-2.

The Crimson scored three runs on three hits and an error in the top of the seventh to win the contest. Right hander Brandon Donovan retired the first batter on a pop-up, however, Hunter Baldwin singled to right and McColl followed with another homer to even the contest. Designated hitter Hunter Bigge recorded a two-out single and came around to score the game-winning run on an error by second baseman David Bryant.

Harvard right-hander Buddy Hayward went the distance in the nightcap as he allowed just three hits and two earned runs over 7.0 innings.

Mundy tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning with his second home run of the season, an opposite field shot to left center.

However, Jake Suddleson answered with a homer of starter Derek Domecq, who allowed a run on four walks to start the top of the first.

The Crimson extended the lead to 3-1 as Domecq allowed another homer to Logan Bravo in the top of the fourth.

The Highlanders trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth as center fielder Kyle Butler produced an RBI single.

Harvard, however, blew the game open in the top of the sixth inning as they scored five runs on two hits and two errors off right-handed reliever Bruce Hudson. The Crimson added their final run on a lead-off homer off left-handed reliever Hunter Williams.
