RADFORD POWERS PAST MERCER, FALLS TO LOUISVILLE IN WAR EAGLE CHALLENGE

AUBURN, Ala. – Both games had their own crooked number innings that proved to be difference makers on Saturday at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Ala. The Highlanders were on both sides of the big innings as the first came in a 6-0 loss to Louisville and the second came in a 8-3 win over Mercer.

GAME ONE vs. LOUISVILLE
Radford fell victim to a Louisville five-run inning in game one of the day. The five runs came in the second inning and the first run of the game came on an RBI bunt single by Kyra Snyder. Snyder stole second and Madison Cousineau was hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for Louisville with one out.

Cassady Greenwood drew a bases loaded walk and Celene Funke flew out to center field, but it was deep enough to score Snyder. The two runs gave Louisville a 3-0 lead. On the ensuing at-bat Sidney Melton tripled to right-center field and cleared the bases.

The Highlanders had a good chance to cut into the 5-0 lead in the fourth inning. The bases were loaded with the red-hot Sydney Fisher, who went 2-for-4 on the day, at the dish. The sophomore grounded into an inning-ending fielder's choice.

Louisville increased its lead to six with an RBI double by Melton. She plated Funke, who reached on a bunt single.

The biggest Highlander threat to get on the scoreboard came in the fifth inning. Hannah Medlam and Talia Douglas led off the inning with singles and a Sofia Tapia walk loaded the bases. Maggie Rowe put the ball in play, but it didn't get out of the infield and Kyra Snyder, the Cardinal pitcher, threw it home to get the force out and keep the shutout intact.

The bases were still loaded with one out when Destiny Freeman hit a sharp line drive. The ball went right to the shortstop for the second out of the inning. Snyder and the Cardinals got out of the jam with a Brooke Bond strikeout.

That was the last major threat the Highlanders could get. The only other hit was Fisher's second – a double to center field.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Fisher and Douglas had multi-hit games for Radford. The duo had four of the team's eight hits with two each. Fisher's double was the lone extra-base hit for Radford. Tapia increased her walk total to 15 for the season after drawing two against the Cardinals.

GAME TWO vs. MERCER
Radford tallied a weekend-high 10 hits in game two against Mercer. Three of them came in the first inning and led to five Highlander runs. With a runner on second and one out, Douglas gave Radford its first hit of the game. Not only was it the first hit, but it also plated Fisher for the first run of the game.

After Tapia put runners at first and second with a walk, Maggie Rowe drove them in with a double to right field. That gave Radford a 3-0 lead still with one out in the opening frame. Hunter Mundy cleared the bases with a home run to left field and increased the lead to 5-0 before the final two outs of the inning.

Jessie Marvin (3-4) gave up a hit to begin the first and second innings, respectively. She got some help from Medlam in left field in the second inning as she caught a fly ball for the first out and threw it home to get the Tori Ash, who led off the inning with a triple, for the second out.

Marvin saw five baserunners reach across the third and fourth innings, but none of them scored. That changed in the fifth inning when Shalia Warren hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and gave the Bears their first two runs of the game. Marvin did however get out of a bases loaded jam for the second time in five innings.

Luckily the Highlanders plated two runs in the third inning and had a 7-2 lead through five.

The win didn't come easy for Radford. Mercer found themselves with the bases loaded once again in the sixth inning, this time with two outs. Megan Lane singled to Douglas at shortstop, but the ball was too deep in the hole and Douglas couldn't make a play as a run scored and cut the lead to four, 7-3.

Marvin was able to rely on her defense and get a fly ball out to left field that ended the sixth inning with the tying run stranded at first.

Radford added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning with Fisher's first home run as a Highlander. The two-out bomb gave Radford an 8-3 lead and Marvin was able to get a true three up, three down seventh inning to close it out.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Highlanders' 10 hits were fairly spread out as seven different players recorded at least one. Fisher, Tapia and Maggie Rowe each had two-hit games. Tapia went 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while Rowe had a 2-for-3 day with two runs driven in. Mundy led the team with three RBIs. Radford hit .400 as a team and went 5-for-7 (.714) with runners in scoring position.
