HIGHLANDERS COMPLETE HISTORIC REGULAR-SEASON WITH COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN AT PRESBYTERIAN

Clinton, South Carolina - - - The Radford women's basketball team completed their historic regular-season with a come-from-behind, 48-43 victory against the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Saturday afternoon at the Templeton Center.

The Highlanders finished the regular-season with a 23-6 record and went 17-1 in the Big South Conference, a new program record for conference wins in a season. In addition, Radford has won a school-record 15 straight contests heading into next week's Big South Tournament.  Radford, who earned the No. 1 seed, will host a quarterfinal game at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Dedmon Center.

"I'm incredibly proud of this team and their consistent performance throughout the regular season," said Highlander head coach Mike McGuire. "What makes this team special is that they have continued to focus on the opportunity directly in front of them and have found ways to win different types of games.

"This has been a historical regular season with a lot of accomplishments that we will look back on at the conclusion of the season, McGuire added. "Right now, I know this team is focused on preparing for the conference tournament and the opportunity Thursday night."

Redshirt junior-forward Lydia Rivers and classmate Sydney Nunley both produced double-doubles in Saturday's contest. Rivers, who leads the conference with 13 double-doubles, recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds while Nunley (12 double-doubles) had 15 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Junior guard Khiana Johnson came up with some huge buckets down the stretch and finished with 12 points.

Saturday's contest was not easy as Radford trailed 32-22 with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter before turning things around.

Senior guard/forward Destinee Walker scored on a layup to cut the deficit to 32-24 at the end of the third quarter.  Radford then scored the first 13 points of the fourth stanza to move ahead, 37-34, with 6:31 left in the contest.

Redshirt-junior forward Sydney Nunley opened the fourth quarter with a conventional 3-point play and then classmate Lydia Rivers followed with a layup to trim the deficit to 34-31 at the 9:16 mark.

Nunley scored again inside and then Rivers gave the Highlanders the lead at 35-34 with 7:46 remaining after converting a layup.  Rivers completed the 15-0 run with another layup off a feed from junior guard Khiana Johnson at the 6:31 mark.

The hosts reclaimed the lead at 39-37 after a Bria Gibbs jumper at the 4:15 mark, however, Walker drained the Highlanders first triple of the contest to give Radford the lead for good at 40-39 with exactly four minutes remaining.

Johnson followed with back-to-back jumpers to stake Radford to a 44-39 advantage with just 1:39 left in the game.

Trinity Johnson would make 1-of-2 from the line to bring the Blue Hose within 44-40, but Johnson struck again and iced the contest with another key jumper to put the Highlanders up six with 1:07 left.

Stay tuned for Big South Tournament pairings.
