HIGHLANDERS DROP SERIES OPENER TO LONGWOOD

RADFORD, Va. – It was only the second Thursday night game Radford played all season and the Highlanders couldn't come out on top in a 4-0 loss to Longwood at Radford Softball Stadium.

Radford could only get two hits and faced a tough pitcher in Sydney Backstrom, who retired 14 straight batters.

The Lancers struck first when Alexis Wayland scored off Jenna Dunn's sacrifice fly. Wayland, the Lancers leadoff hitter, singled to start the game. She should've been out on the front end of a double play, but the Highlanders' second baseman mishandled the ball. Batten, who reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second after the next batter was hit by a pitch. The inning ended when she was thrown trying to steal third.

Radford almost answered as Medlam and Douglas each tallied a hit. Medlam reached on a single to left field and Douglas moved her to third with a double down the right field line all with one out. Maggie Rowe grounded out to third on the first pitch of her at-bat and Medlam was thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch.

That was the last hit the Highlanders got and Longwood added to its 1-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second. After that, Kayla Huffman settled in and pitched two scoreless innings until Jordan Clark reached on a triple and scored on a Batten sac bunt in the fifth inning. That gave the Lancers a 4-0 lead.

The Highlanders managed to get another base runner in the seventh when Destiny Freeman drew a one-out walk – her second walk of the contest. Freeman never scored as the final two outs ended the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Hannah Morris pitched a solid outing in the seventh inning. She allowed two hits but picked up two strikeouts – a season best for the freshman. Huffman only surrendered five hits through six innings and four runs (three allowed) with one strikeout. Jordan Clark had the only multi-hit performance for Longwood, while Jessica Smith led the way two RBIs.

UP NEXT
Radford will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to face the league's best pitching staff in USC Upstate. The first two of a three-game series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
