RADFORD DROPS A PAIR OF GAMES AGAINST USC UPSTATE

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford softball team fell to USC Upstate in a doubleheader on Saturday at Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. The first was a pitcher's duel that went in favor of the Spartans, 4-0. The second game saw more of an offensive outburst that USC Upstate won, 9-5.

GAME ONE
One crooked number inning by USC Upstate was the difference maker in game one. It came in the sixth inning.

With only one hit through five innings, the Spartans had an infield single for their second hit of the game. The next batter reached on a fielder's choice and Sarah Price, the first batter, slid in safely at second base. The leading home run hitter for the Spartans, Alyssa Oakes, was hit by a pitch. That loaded the bases with no outs for Brittany Case.

Case doubled a 1-2 pitch to left center field and scored a pair of runs giving USC Upstate a 2-0 lead. The Spartans added a couple more on a throwing error by Talia Douglas before the end of the inning.

Aside from the one inning – and really the lone double of the game – Jessie Marvin pitched one of her best games all season. She only gave up two hits and one walk through four innings of work. She finished the six innings of work with four runs on four hits – two earned. She tallied one strikeout with 80 pitches thrown.

The Highlanders were looking for a comeback in the seventh inning, but it didn't happen as the inning saw just three batters.

Radford did lead in the hit column at one point with hits each from Douglas and Destiny Freeman. That came in the fourth inning, which was the Highlanders best chance to plate a run. Back-to-back hits by Douglas and Freeman put runners on first and second with one out. Maggie Rowe moved them over with a sac bunt, but a strikeout ended the threat.

STAT OF THE GAME
Of Marvin's 80 pitches, 55 of them were strikes and only threw more than three pitches to 14 of the 26 batters she faced.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders flipped the script with a big inning of their own in the second game, however USC Upstate scored in six of the seven innings to claim a 9-5 lead.

The big inning for Radford came in the fifth with USC Upstate on top 6-0. Jessie Marvin got the inning started with a single down the right field line. Sydney Fisher followed that up with a hit of her own. Medlam drove in Marvin with a single to right field and moved to second on the throw, which put Fisher at third.

The five-run deficit was cut to three when Talia Douglas tripled down the right field line and plated Fisher and Medlam. Douglas' second career triple made it a 6-3 game. Destiny Freeman picked up her third hit of the game and plated Douglas. After Maggie Rowe was hit by a pitch, Tapia doubled through the left side and cut the USC Upstate lead to one, 6-5. The Spartans made a pitching change after that at-bat and brought in Christina Biggerstaff.

Radford had runners at second and third with nobody out but Biggerstaff needed just 10 pitches to strike out the side and preserve the lead.

USC Upstate scored four runs early in the contest when Radford made a pitching change in the third inning. The Highlanders brought in Hannah Morris, who had a good outing against Duke in her last appearance. Morris retired the first four batters she faced before getting into some trouble in the fourth. The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the inning and took a 6-0 lead.

Knowing the Highlanders' had new life, Morris pitched around a leadoff walk to keep the Spartans scoreless in the fifth - the first scoreless inning all game. However, Radford couldn't get anything going in the sixth with a scoreless frame.

Upstate added some insurance runs scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Tapia picked up her second hit of the game in the seventh with two outs, but it was all Radford could get in the seventh.

STAT OF THE GAME
Freeman had a three-hit game (3-for-4) for the second time in her young career.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Along with Freeman's three hit day, Medlam and Tapia had a pair of hits each and a double each. Three other Highlanders had a tally in the hit column totaling 10 hits in the contest. Douglas had the only multi-RBI game for Radford with two.
