HOME RUNS NOT ENOUGH OFFENSE FOR RADFORD IN SERIES FINALE

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A pair of home runs couldn't provide enough offense as the Radford softball team fell, 5-3, in the series finale with USC Upstate on Monday afternoon.

Destiny Freeman and Talia Douglas each hit home runs, which gave Radford a 3-0 lead, but the Highlanders couldn't avoid the Spartan comeback as they scored five runs off three home runs.

Freeman gave Radford an early 1-0 lead when she hit her 10th home run of the season in the second inning. She only saw one pitch in the at-bat and drove it to the opposite side of the field where it found its way over the fence.

Jessie Marvin, who earned the start in the circle, pitched a perfect second inning and preserved the Highlander lead. Talia Douglas extended the lead in the third inning with a two-run home run. Hannah Medlam picked up a two-out single to right field before Douglas wrapped the first pitch of her at-bat around the left field foul pole giving Radford a 3-0 lead.

The lead was in danger just three batters into the bottom of the third as Kayla Hussey and Sarah Price picked up hits. Alyssa Oakes hit her 21st home run of the season and tied the game at three.

USC Upstate took the lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run and was looking to add to the lead in the fifth. The Spartans had a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Megan Obier hit a soft line drive that appeared to be over the head of Douglas at second base. Douglas reached over her head, leapt up and caught the ball. She turned around only to find the runner at second halfway down the line and threw it to Fisher covering the bag for the inning-ending double play.

Radford had its best chance to get the lead back in the sixth inning. Sofia Tapia and Hunter Mundy hit a pair of one-out singles which put two base runners aboard at the same moment for the first time all game. However, a fly out to left field and a strikeout ended the threat.

The Spartans added to the one run lead with another solo home run in the sixth inning.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders tallied 11 hits in the contest and had at least one hit every inning. Radford had its opportunities but couldn't get the timely hits it needed and stranded seven runners on base.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Douglas led the way offensively with a 2-for-4 day, a home run and a pair of RBIs. Freeman also went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Medlam was the only other Highlander to record a pair of hits with a 2-for-4 game. The 1-4 hitters in the batting order had seven of the 11 hits. Marvin picked up three strikeouts in six innings of work and the defense played an errorless game.
