SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH LONGWOOD, POWERS PAST LANCERS IN GAME TWO

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team split with Longwood in doubleheader action on Wednesday afternoon at Radford Softball Stadium. The Lancers took the first game, 3-2, and the Highlanders bounced back to pick up the second, 4-2.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders came out on the losing end in a pitcher's duel in game one of the day. Radford held a 2-1 advantage from the bottom of the fourth to the final inning of the game.

Jenna Dunn gave Longwood life with a one-out single up the middle and then she swiped second base. Alexis Wayland doubled to left center field and plated the tying run. Radford made a pitching change, but the Lancers still took the lead via Jordan Clark's RBI single to left field. It was Longwood's third consecutive hit of the inning. Hannah Morris, who took over in the circle, was able to get the final two outs and keep the Highlanders close.

Down to its last at-bat, Radford got a little hope as Ellie Rowe doubled to left center field, but a pop out in shallow left field ended the game on the next at-bat.

Longwood took a 1-0 lead on the first pitch of the game when Wayland hit a home run to left field. The Highlanders kept battling as Kayla Huffman found a groove on the pitching rubber. The offense came through in the fourth inning as the Highlanders picked up three hits and took advantage of a Lancer error en route to a 2-1 lead.

Talia Douglas led off the frame with a single to left field. Destiny Freeman followed that up with an infield single. Two batters later, Hunter Mundy gave Radford its first run with a seeing-eye single tying the game at one. On the ensuing at-bat Sofia Tapia reached on a fielder's choice and Freeman scored on throwing error by Sydney Gay, the Longwood pitcher.

Radford held on to its 2-1 lead and Huffman continued to pitch five scoreless frames until the seventh inning.

GAME TWO
Sheer power and timely pitching were the driving force behind Radford's series finale victory.

The second game seemed to follow suit as the first with the first two and half innings scoreless. That changed when Radford took a 1-0 lead as Lindsay Hunter, who reached with a leadoff walk, scored on a throwing error by the Lancer shortstop.

The lead increased to 3-0 when Sydney Fisher yanked a ball high and deep to right field in the fourth inning. The ball went into the pine trees scoring Ellie Rowe, who reached on a dropped fly ball, and Fisher.

As Jessie Marvin, the Highlanders starting pitcher, continued to pick up steam; the Highlanders continued to go yard. Talia Douglas got in on the home run party and drove one to straightaway center over the pine trees. Her sixth home run of the season – and second in as many games – extended the Radford lead to 4-0.

Marvin was cruising, retiring 11 straight from the third through the sixth inning, and was one inning away from a shutout. That changed in the seventh. The Lancers had a runner on first and were down to their final out when Sydney Jacobsen hit a pinch-hit home run and cut the lead in half.

Alexis Wayland and Jordan Clark followed that up with a pair of singles and Marvin loaded the bases with a walk. However, the sophomore was able to get a fly ball to Hannah Medlam in left field, who made the final out and sealed the victory for the Highlanders.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The Highlanders only needed three hits in the game. They came from Fisher, Douglas and Maggie Rowe. Fisher drove in two, while Douglas drove in one. Marvin pitched well – only allowing two runs on seven hits in a winning effort.
