MUNDY AND MARVIN CARRY RADFORD IN DOUBLEHEADER WIN VS. HAMPTON

RADFORD, Va. – Jessie Marvin's stellar three-hit shutout in game one and Hunter Mundy's pair of home runs in game two lifted Radford to a 1-0 and 3-2 doubleheader win over Hampton on Thursday night at Radford Softball Complex.

The night was only slated to have one game at 5 p.m., but the first game lasted less than an hour and a half and the two teams agreed to play a second immediately after to get ahead of potential rain in the forecast on Friday. The two teams will complete the series on Friday at 11 a.m., with senior day festivities scheduled to take place approximately 15 minutes before first pitch.

GAME ONE
The past few games have been low-scoring affairs but game one of the series was the lowest of the low. One run was all the difference and it came from Mundy in the fifth inning.

Mundy reached with a two-out single in the inning and Tapia followed that up with a single of her own moving Mundy to second. Ellie Rowe gave Radford its third consecutive hit of the inning and plated Mundy for the first and only run of the game.

Radford scored all the offense it needed as Marvin was cruising in the circle. Hampton had a pair of base runners reach base in the first two innings, but Marvin was able to pitch around them. The sophomore retired 10 in a row before giving up her second hit of the game in the fourth inning.

The single by Kail Watts was no harm and Marvin moved right along. The Pirates had a chance to score a run in the fifth with a runner at second and one out. Marvin threw five strikes and got two outs to end the frame.

Hampton had another chance in the seventh – this time with a runner at third and two outs. However, Marvin was able to get Kiaya Jeusi to ground out to Sydney Fisher for the final out of the game.

Marvin (10-12) only allowed three hits through seven innings. She struck out four and only walked one.

GAME TWO
The unexpected game two of the evening saw four more runs scored and another close contest. Mundy stole the show in the second game with a pair of home runs for the second time in her career.

The first came against Winthrop on May 7, 2017 during her freshman campaign. These two were solo home runs and both of them came at the perfect time.

The first for the sophomore came in the fourth inning when Radford fell behind 2-1. Brianna Anderson gave Hampton a one-run advantage with a home run to left center field to start the fourth. Mundy answered Anderson's long ball with a home run of her own to start the fourth. She tied the game at two.

Each team had scoreless fifth innings and Mundy did it again to start the bottom of the sixth. She hit a ball on a line to right center field that went in between the two pine trees. Her team-leading 12th home run of the year gave Radford a 3-2 lead.

Huffman, who pitched well in the circle, pitched a three-up, three-down seventh inning. She finished with a four-strikeout complete game and only allowed two runs on three hits.

One of Hampton's runs came in the first inning and gave them a 1-0 lead. Lindsay Hunter took advantage of making her 10th start at the designated player position with an RBI single in the second inning that plated Mundy and tied the game at one.

Mundy also added a double to her list of hits going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. The three hits and three runs scored tied a career-high for the Creedmoor, N.C., native. E. Rowe also had a multi-hit game for the fourth time in her career.

STAT OF THE GAME
Mundy's pair of home runs were both leadoff home runs and came on the first pitch of each at-bat.

UP NEXT
Radford will plan to face Hampton on Friday at 11 a.m., but that could change with the impending weather.
