HIGHLANDERS FALL AT CAMPBELL, 6-2, IN BATTLE FOR BIG SOUTH LEAD

Buis Creek, N.C. – The Radford baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision against the Campbell Camels, in the middle game of their key Big South series on Saturday evening at Jim Perry Stadium. Radford fell to 9-5 in the conference standings while the hosts improved to 11-3.

Starter Derek Domecq (1-3) suffered the loss as he was charged with two earned runs in 2.2 innings of work. The freshman walked three, hit a batter and allowed a hit over 58 pitches. Left-hander Andrew Nardi allowed three runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings of relief. Brandon Donovan pitched the final two innings without yielding a run.

Designated hitter J.D. Mundy blasted his seventh home run of the season and is now tied for the team lead with Andrew Szamski. The right fielder went 0-for-4 and had his 12-game hitting streak come to an end. Catcher Will Harless went 2-for-3 with a double.

Campbell (22-13) scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning after Domecq retired the first two batters in quick order. The left-hander yielded back-to-back walks to right fielder Grant Harris and shortstop Luis Gimenez, then grazed designated hitter Spencer Packard on the arm to load the bases. The Highlanders went to the bullpen and summoned Nardi to face Collin Wolff. The third baseman promptly hit a well-placed ground ball through the vacated shortstop hole, scoring two runs. Highlander left fielder Carlin Christian then dropped a low line drive off the bat off first baseman Kolby Collins to score Packard.

The Highlanders (17-17) got their first base runner of the game in the top of the fourth as first baseman Spencer Horwitz was ruled to have been hit with a pitch as he was attempting a one-out bunt. Radford took advantage of the controversial call as Mundy cranked a no-doubter for a home run over the right field fence off right-handed starter Michael Horrell.

Campbell added three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Gimenez recorded a hard-hit two-out single that went in and out of the glove of shortstop Colby Higgerson, who looked to have had trouble with his footing on the play.  Packard followed with a two-run single through the middle to score Gimenez and Harris (double).

Radford missed on an excellent scoring opportunity in the top half of the fifth inning after the bottom of the order (Higgerson, Harless and Christian) came up with three straight one-out singles to load the bases. However, center fielder Kyle Butler popped to second base and Horwitz hit a routine fly ball to center to end the threat.

Horrell, who threw 115 pitches (82 strikes), improved to 6-1 on the season as he allowed just six hits and two runs over eight innings.

Tyson Messer pitched the final inning for the Camels.

The rubber-game of the series will be played on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
