HIGHLANDERS EIGHT-GAME WINNING STREAK HALTED AT EAST TENNESSEE STATE AS COMEBACK ATTEMPT FALLS JUST SHORT

Johnson City, Tenn. – The Radford baseball team was edged by East Tennessee State, 6-5, on Tuesday evening at Thomas Stadium. The Buccaneers stopped the Highlanders eight-game winning streak as they were able to survive a ninth-inning Radford rally.

Radford (14-14), who trailed 6-4 heading into the ninth, scored a run and had the tying run on third base with two outs but were unable to complete the comeback.

Designated hitter J.D. Mundy went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs while center fielder Kyle Butler registered a 2-for-5 performance. The red-hot Andrew Szamski was 1-for-3, scored a pair of runs and drove in a run.

The hosts scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter Hunter Williams to grab a 3-0 lead. Left fielder Ethan Shelton doubled in two runs to left center and center fielder David Beam added an RBI single through the left side.

Williams yielded a fourth run in the bottom of the second and was replaced by reliever Brandon Feathers.

Radford responded with three runs on five hits in the top of the third inning, trimming the deficit to 4-3.

Butler and first baseman Spencer Horwitz opened the frame with consecutive singles. Szamszi, with Butler on third, reached on a fielder's choice to bring in the first run with an RBI. Mundy followed with an opposite laser double to left center, plating Szamski from first.  Left fielder Adam Whitacre kept things going with a line drive RBI single to left center to score Mundy. After another single by catcher Will Harless, third baseman Matt Roth hit into an inning ending double play.

Neither team created much offense until the Bucs scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to grab a 5-3 advantage.  After a couple of hits, catcher Kyle Richardson hit a fielder's choice RBI to score pinch runner Ethan Cady.

Radford got a run back in the top of the eighth as Szamski recorded a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mundy then drove in his second run with another opposite field hit to left.

East Tennessee State (22-6) added a much-needed insurance run in the bottom of the frame as third baseman Jake Lyle tripled after Whitacre made a diving attempt at the ball. Shortstop Colby Higgerson then made an errant relay throw, allowing Lyle to trot home.

The Highlanders almost came all the way back in the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitters Jimmy Goldsmith (walk) and Straton Podaras (single) got things started for Radford. Second baseman David Bryant followed with a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to second and third with just one out. Butler then hit an RBI groundout to make it 6-5.  However, Horwitz struck out looking on a 2-2 count to end the game, stranding the tying run on third.

Williams fell to 0-2 after allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings.

Feathers was terrific as he allowed just a hit, no runs, and no walks in his 3.1 innings of work.

Radford will host Big South foe USC Upstate for three games beginning on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m.
