RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team fell, 6-11, to Campbell at Cupp Stadium on Saturday and the collegiate careers of 12 incredible young women came to an end.
Callie Bonnel, Juliette Ruland, Shelby Merchant, Avery Reding, Emma Rogers, Adrian Rius, Emily Kowalik, Michaela Petersen, Hannah Rosen, Amanda Mirabile (Manager), Jessie Kallish (Manager) and Allison Brennan (Manager) were all honored in a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day.
Crucial to building the foundation of the program, all nine players were members of the starting lineup and along with their teammates, each and every one of them gave it their all. Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be against the Fighting Camels.
The visitors built a lead early, beginning the game on a 4-0 run. Team captain Emma Rogers finally got Radford on the board at the 25:07 mark and from there the Highlanders scored four of the next six goals to pull within two.
Campbell countered with two more goals to make it 9-5 going into halftime and the scoring slowed way down from there. Sophomore attacker Jen Shield notched the first point of the second half with 21:58 remaining and the Camels scored two goals over the final 20 minutes as defense took over.
Ruland and Shield tied for the team lead with two goals apiece while Rogers and junior attacker Lindsey Carroll accounted for the others. Emily Kowalik led all players with five ground balls, Bonnel grabbed three draw controls and Ruland, Rogers and Avery Reding all caused three turnovers.
STAT OF THE GAME
After a goalkeeping change, freshman Maddie Bowman provided a fantastic performance between the pipes. She finished with 13 saves and a sterling .722 save percentage.
