HIGHLANDERS EDGED BY VIRGINIA TECH ON WEDNESDAY EVENING, 8-6

Radford, Va. – The Radford baseball team had their four-game winning streak come to an end as the Highlanders fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies, 8-6, on Wednesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium. Radford dropped to 21-20 on the season.

Left-hander Derek Domecq (1-3) took the loss in relief as he allowed three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings of work.  Starter Cole Dunn yielded four earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Relievers Ryan Bywaters ( 2.0 innings, 1 earned run) and Graham Firoved (1.0 inning, no runs, 2 Ks) were impressive over the final three innings out of the bullpen.

Second baseman Clayton Baine hit his third home run in the last two games and drove in a team-high three runs. Left fielder Garrett Matheny smacked his second homer of the season. Shortstop Colby Higgerson drew four walks and first baseman Spencer Horwitz reached base via a free pass three times. The Highlanders, who stranded 10 base runners, drew 12 walks in the contest.

The Hokies (24-18) scored two runs in the top of the first as Dunn allowed back-to-back RBI doubles to designated hitter Luke Horanski and right fielder Kerry Carpenter.

The visitors extended their lead to 3-0 in the second on an RBI single by catcher Nick Biddison, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

Matheny blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left field wall against Hokies' starter Ryan Metz to get the Highlanders on the board in the third.

Shortstop Nick Owens gave Virginia Tech a 4-1 advantage in the fourth after delivering an RBI single.

The Highlanders scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab their first lead of the game at 5-4. Horwitz scored on a wild pitch and then Baine clobbered a three-run blast off the scoreboard in left center against right-hander Zach Brzykcy, his fourth of the year.

Virginia Tech, however, tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Biddison and then added two more in the seventh to go ahead for good. First baseman Dalton Harum recorded an RBI double and Nick Owens added an RBI single.

Biddison extended the Hokies lead to 8-5 with a home run to right center in the top of the eighth.

The Highlanders scored a run on an infield RBI single by pinch hitter Adam Whitacre in the bottom of the eighth. Radford had an opportunity for more, but right fielder Andrew Szamski struck out swinging with the bases loaded to end the frame.

Radford also had the tying run at the plate after Higgerson walked in the ninth, but Baine fanned looking to end the game.

Brzykcy improved to 3-0 after allowing two earned runs on one hit in three innings for the Hokies.

Radford will travel to Gardner-Webb this weekend for three Big South contests.
