RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Friday, April 26th and Monday, April 29th.


 
 HIGHLANDER OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
 

Friday, April 26th - shotgun start at Noon and reception/awards program at 5 p.m.

  • Join Radford University Athletics coaches and staff for a fun-filled afternoon of golf at the Pete Dye River Course for the Highlander Open presented by Atlantic Bay Mortgage.
  • Gather up your favorite foursome and join us for golf, raffle prizes and a reception after play.
  • All proceeds will benefit the Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund. Lunch will be provided and all golfers will receive a special participant gift.
  • The cost for a foursome is $500 ($125 per player). We encourage teams to pay together, rather than individually. Please note $20 is tax deductible per player.

  • The Highlanders had their four-game winning streak come to an end as the Highlanders fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies, 8-6, on Wednesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium. 
  • Left-hander Derek Domecq (1-3) took the loss in relief as he allowed three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings of work.  Starter Cole Dunn yielded four earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Relievers Ryan Bywaters ( 2.0 innings, 1 earned run) and Graham Firoved (1.0 inning, no runs, 2 Ks) were impressive over the final three innings out of the bullpen.
  • Second baseman Clayton Baine hit his third home run in the last two games and drove in a team-high three runs. Left fielder Garrett Matheny smacked his second homer of the season. Shortstop Colby Higgerson drew a 2019 Radford single-game high four walks and first baseman Spencer Horwitz reached base via a free pass three times. The Highlanders, who stranded 10 base runners, drew a season-high 12 walks in the contest.
  • The Highlanders are 19-0 when leading or tied after seven innings this season but are just 1-18 when trailing after seven.
  • Kyle Butler has a a six-game hitting streak, one shy of his longest for the season.
  • Justin Kunz and Corey Howard are both hitting .327 to pace the Bulldogs this season. Kunz is second on the team with nine homers and 31 RBI's.
  • Chandler Redmond leads the squad with 14 home runs and 45 RBI's.
  • Landon Mitchell leads the pitching staff with a 4-4 record and has a 4.56 ERA in 53.1 innings of work.

  • The Highlanders head to the University of Virginia for one final tune-up before the 2019 Big South Outdoor Championships
  • It's the third straight season that Radford has attended the Virginia Grand Prix
  • A total of 19 schools and 36 teams are expected to compete at Lannigan Field this weekend
  • Heading into the weekend, two Highlanders lead the Big South in their events: La'Tisha Chambers (200m) and Taylor Tinsley (High Jump)
  • Freshman Emilie Miller broke Latisa Bailey's 2001 mark in the 100-meter hurdles with a lifetime PR of 13.94 seconds. The time also qualified her for the U20 USA Championships in June.
 
 HIGHLANDER HALF & 5K

  • Radford University Athletics and the Radford University Athletic Foundation will be hosting the Third Annual Highlander Half Marathon and 5K presented by Carilion Clinic on Saturday, April 27, 2019. All race proceeds will go towards the Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund which provides scholarship aid to our 16 athletic programs.
  • The Half Marathon will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Dedmon Center on Radford University's campus. The race course will take runners on a tour of Radford that includes Main Street, our beautiful campus, and the surrounding neighborhoods. As runners head back to town, they will continue on their tour through Wildwood Park and end at Bisset Park.
  • The 5K will begin at the Dedmon Center at 9:30 a.m. Runners will tour the Radford Athletic Complex before jump on the Bisset Park trail right by the dog park and follow it the whole way down the river. This race provides a scenic and family friendly race for everyone to enjoy.  All runners will cross the finish line and go straight into the Rolling on the River Food Truck Rodeo in Bisset Park.
  • Come join us for a day of fun! Wear your Radford gear and show your support for our Highlanders. Also, enjoy a special discount on kids under the age of 12 that decide to join us for the run! Kilts are strongly encouraged!
