HENDERSON KICKS OFF VIRGINIA GRAND PRIX IN STYLE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Kierra Henderson got the 2019 Virginia Grand Prix started in style for the Radford track & field team with a huge personal record at Lannigan Field Friday night.

The Lorton, Va. native absolutely destroyed her previous PR of 5.49 meters with a leap of 5.70 meters (18'9") this time out. Not only does the jump rank second in the Big South Conference this season, but it's the fifth-best in program history and the best distance for any Highlander long jumper in the last 10 years.

Then, despite having to battle strong winds in the finals, Henderson followed up her first performance with a jump of 5.52 meters to place second overall.

With Henderson now joining the list, Radford now has six athletes who have performances that rank top-3 in the Big South this season. Others who qualify for the honor and look to be in good shape heading into next weekend's Outdoor Championships include La'Tisha Chambers (100m & 200m), Chancey Gunnell (400m), Emilie Miller (100mH), Kayland Bond (3000m steeplechase), Taylor Tinsley (high jump) and the 4x100-meter relay team.

UP NEXT
The Highlanders tackle an event-filled day on Saturday at the Virginia Grand Prix. The women's hammer throw is the first event of the day at 11:30 a.m. while running events begin around 3:50 p.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.
