HIGHLANDERS SPLIT WITH ETSU IN MIDWEEK ACTION

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team split with ETSU in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Radford Softball Stadium. The Highlanders fell in game one, 4-3, but came out on top in game two, 3-2.

GAME 1
The Highlanders only had four hits and were down 4-1 heading into the final frame of the contest. That changed as Maggie Rowe led off the seventh inning with a double to left field. Hunter Mundy drove her in and cut the deficit to one with a home run to left field.

Taylor Boling came into the circle for ETSU an picked up two outs. Then Sydney Fisher gave Radford its seventh hit and was only 120 feet away from scoring the game-tying run. However, Fisher stayed at second as Hannah Medlam grounded out to third for the final out of the game.

ETSU took an early 3-0 lead as they took advantage of two Highlander errors and added four hits in the top of the first inning.

Sofia Tapia gave Radford its first hit of the game in the second inning before Destiny Freeman gave the Highlanders their first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Her sacrifice fly drove in Brooke Bond, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. That made it a 3-1 contest.

Kelsey Brown gave the Buccaneers a 4-1 lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning. After that Jessie Marvin got 10 of the final 12 batters out, but the lead was too much for the Highlander offense to come back from.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Fisher and M. Rowe had four of the seven hits and tacked on a double each. Mundy's lone hit of the game was a home run and drove in a team-high two runs. Ellie Rowe made her first start in seven games after returning from a minor injury and picked up a hit. Marvin pitched a complete game and allowed four runs – one earned – on seven hits. She also struck out three batters.

GAME 2
Destiny Freeman's sixth inning home run and a nine strikeout performance from Kayla Huffman lifted Radford to a 3-2 victory in game two.

Radford fell behind 2-1, despite scoring its first run in the first inning on a Talia Douglas RBI double. Destiny Freeman stepped in with a runner on first and nobody out in the sixth inning. She beamed the first pitch of the at-bat to right field. The screamer found its way into the trees and Radford found itself with a 3-2 lead.

The Highlanders were looking for more but couldn't get any extra runs across the plate after stranding a pair of baserunners. It didn't matter though because the Big South Pitcher of the Week entered the circle in the seventh inning.

She shut down the Buccaneers in a three up, three down inning and earned her 11th complete game of the season. She also picked up her eighth win of the year and was one strikeout shy of tying a single game high.

Huffman ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth inning but still struck out the side despite allowing two unearned runs to cross the plate. The pair of runs gave ETSU a 2-1 lead.

After the fourth inning the King William, Va., native retired the final nine batters she faced.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Huffman struck out nine batters on 102 pitches. She only allowed two runs on four hits, while forcing six fly outs and five ground outs. Douglas was the only Highlander with a multi-hit performance. It was the sophomore's ninth multi-hit game of the season. She drove in one of the three RBIs, while Freeman drove in the other two.
