RADFORD ERASES SEVEN RUN DEFICIT, TAKES SERIES OPENER AGAINST WINTHROP

RADFORD, Va. – Down by seven runs with only six outs to play with, the Radford softball team erased the deficit and scored eight unanswered on its way to a 12-11 victory over Winthrop on Friday night.

The Highlanders were down 11-9 heading into the final frame when Hunter Mundy led off the inning with a solo home run. Her long ball cut the deficit to one, 11-10. After an Eagle pitching change, Ellie Rowe singled through the left side and Lauren Maddrey drew a walk.

Sydney Fisher reached on an infield single to third base and that loaded the bases with no outs. All seemed lost when a pair of fly outs formed two outs in the inning. Then Talia Douglas put a 2-2 pitch in play and the Winthrop shortstop booted the ball into foul territory. That allowed pinch runner Callie Morgan and Maddrey to score, which gave Radford a 12-11 walk-off victory.

The game was tied at four when the Radford pitching staff walked three straight batters and allowed an unearned run to score in the sixth inning. That gave Winthrop a 5-4 lead. An RBI single and a bases loaded walk created a 7-4 lead for the Eagles. Brooke Ellison homered to center field with one out and increased the lead to seven runs, 11-4.

The relentless Highlanders fought their way back and cut the deficit to two runs as they took advantage of two errors and added five hits to plate five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Huffman who started the game, came out and re-entered in the sixth inning. She ran out of the dugout and into the circle in the seventh and shut down the Eagles with an infield pop up and a pair of strikeouts. The senior went on to pick up her ninth win of the season.

Winthrop struck first with a run in the first inning, but Ellie Rowe tied it up with an RBI single in the second inning and Douglas gave Radford the lead with a solo home run in the third.

The Eagles used a three-run home run to go on top 4-2 in the fourth inning before Destiny Freeman used a two-run blast to tie it up in the fifth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford tallied three doubles (Mundy, Fisher and Medlam) and three home runs (Freeman, Douglas and Mundy).
