HUDSON SHUTS DOWN USC UPSTATE AS HIGHLANDERS GET BACK IN WIN COLUMN

Postgame - Bruce Hudson
Postgame - Joe Raccuia

Radford, Va. – The Radford baseball team got back on track on Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders defeated the USC Upstate Spartans, 3-1, at Carter Memorial Stadium.  The Highlanders evened their record at 15-15 and improved to 8-3 in the Big South Conference.

Reliever Bruce Hudson, who has not allowed an earned run over his last 13.2 innings of work, came out of the bullpen with no outs in the top of the fourth inning and blanked the Spartans for the remainder of the game. Hudson (3-1), who fanned four and recorded eight ground ball outs, scattered three hits and walked just one en route to his third Big South victory. He also induced three ground ball double plays, a Radford season-high.

Andrew Szamski remained hot as the reigning Big South Player of the Week went 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to a league-high .397.  Szamski now has a nine-game hitting streak and is batting .579 during the stretch.  Third baseman Matt Roth went 3-for-4 with a home run and shortstop Colby Higgerson was 2-for-4 with a homer.  First baseman Spencer Horwitz contributed two hits and a walk.

Roth and Higgerson homered on consecutive pitches off starter Sean Hupp (1-4) in the bottom of the second inning, providing the hosts with all of the runs they would need. Roth belted his fifth round-tripper to left field and Higgerson went the other way to right center for his fourth big fly.

USC Upstate (14-17, 3-8 Big South) got a run back off Highlander starter Derek Domecq (3.0 innings, 3 hits, two walks) in the top of the fourth inning as the first three batters reached base.  Third baseman Garett Wallace singled to left to drive in second baseman Andres Kim with the Spartans' lone run of the game. Hudson rescued the Highlanders from further damage as he struck out left fielder Jeff Taylor and then induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Radford added an insurance tally in the bottom of the seventh inning as designated hitter J.D. Mundy lashed a hard single through the middle to plate Horwitz (walk).

The Highlanders remain a game behind league-leader Campbell (9-2), who they will travel to next weekend.

The Highlanders and Spartans will play the rubber-game of their three-game series on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
