RADFORD, Va. – Welcome to the Radford Roundup, where fans can find out all the information they need on upcoming Radford Athletics events taking place between Friday, April 12th and Monday, April 15th.


 
 TRACK & FIELD
 

at Gamecock Invitational - Saturday, April 13th
Where: Columbia, S.C. (Sheila and Morris Cregger Track)

  • The Highlanders are entered in South Carolina's Gamecock Invitational for the second consecutive season.
  • There are 46 collegiate teams and more than 1,000 athletes expected to compete over the weekend.
  • Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the women's hammer throw.
  • Track events kick off at 10:20 a.m. with the women's 1,500 meters.
  • Junior La'Tisha Chambers was named Big South Women's Track Athlete of the Week following her performance at the Terrier Relays which was Radford's last meet.
 
 WOMEN'S GOLF
 

at Big South Championships - Friday, April 12th through Sunday, April 14th
Where: Ninety-Six, S.C. (The Patriot Club)

  • The 2019 Big South Women's Golf Championship presented by Musco Sports Lighting is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, April 12-14 at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety Six, S.C., with Campbell University serving as the official host.  
  • All 11 Big South members will compete in the 54-hole event to determine the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
  • The Highlanders are hoping to better the programs' best finish at the event, which was a third-place result in 2015.
  • Radford placed in the top-three in four of their eight events this past season, including two runner-up finishes.  The team came home with a trophy at the Hound and Ears Invitational as well as the Benbow Invitational.
  • Beatriz Mosquera Quintás has been a revelation in her inaugural season in the New River Valley. The native of La Coruna, Spain has recorded five Top 10 finishes and owns a school record 74.86 stroke average. The freshman won the Benbow Invitational and was the runner-up at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational.
 
 MEN'S TENNIS
 

at N.C. Central - Friday, April 12th at 1 p.m.
Where: Durham, N.C. (Dr. Younge Tennis Courts)
Records: Radford (14-6, 5-3 Big South) | N.C. Central (4-11, 3-1 MEAC)
  • The Highlanders have skidded off track in the last three matches but have faced tough competition with two of the top three teams in the Big South.
  • Radford will look to rebound against N.C. Central in its regular season finale on Friday.
  • The Eagles are 4-11 with a two-match losing streak. N.C. Central has yet to win a home match (0-5).
 
 BASEBALL

  • Radford returns to action after a 7-5 victory against VMI on Tuesday evening at Carter Memorial Stadium.
  • The Highlanders recorded 12 hits, including five that went for extra-bases. Radford took both contests against the Keydets this season as they also won in Lexington on March 19.
  • Center fielder Kyle Butler drove in a run and went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple to lead the Highlander attack.  
  • Designated hitter J.D. Mundy and shortstop Colby Higgerson also added a pair of hits. All nine starters recorded a hit and seven different Highlanders drove in a run.
  • Right-hander Ryan Bywaters recorded his first win of the season in his first start of 2019. He allowed a run and yielded seven hits over three innings of work.  
  • Cameron Fritz pitched the final two innings to earn his first save. Fritz allowed a hit, a walk and fanned a pair of Keydets.
  • Right fielder Andrew Szamski owns an 11-game hitting streak and leads the Big South with a .393 batting average, 39 RBI's and 78 total bases.
  • Left-hander Zach Ridgely is tied for seventh in the league with a 3.46 ERA.
  • Campbell leads the Big South with a staff ERA of 4.06 and are second with a .270 batting average.
  • Luis Gimenez is second in the league in batting (.344) and doubles (11).
  • Matthew Barefoot ranks among the conference leaders in total bases (T-1, 77), runs scored (3rd, 31), slugging (5th, .602), RBI's (T-4, 29), doubles (T-4, 9), triples (T-1, 3), home runs (4th, 7). 
 
 SOFTBALL
 

at USC Upstate - Sat., April 13 at 1 / 3 p.m. (DH) | Sun., April 14 at 1 p.m.
Where: Spartanburg, S.C. (Cyrill Softball Stadium)
Records: Radford (18-22, 8-4 Big South) | USC Upstate (33-10, 13-4 Big South)
  • Radford has a tough weekend ahead of itself. The Highlanders travel to USC Upstate for a three-game set.
  • This comes just one day after the series opener with Longwood on Thursday and just three days after an 8-6 loss at Duke.
  • Radford outhit the Blue Devils 13-10, but also committed three errors in the contest.
  • Hunter Mundy has been seeing the ball well in the last five games. She has gone 9-for-18 with five runs scored, one double and three home runs.
  • Sydney Fisher has been hitting the ball well all season and that has shown in the last five games as well. She has 11 hits in 20 at-bats with two doubles and seven runs scored.
  • Fisher is just four hits away from cracking the single-season top 10 at Radford and her 61 hits rank second in the country.
  • USC Upstate has been a great addition to the Big South coming in the weekend with a 33-10 record including a 10-game winning streak.
  • Upstate also enters the weekend with a 23-1 record at Cyrill Stadium with its lone loss coming to East Carolina on Feb. 10.
  • Pitching has a key component to the success off the Spartans. They have a pair of pitchers with sub 2.00 ERA's. Christina Biggerstaff (20-3) enters with a 1.05 ERA and 199 strikeouts in 153.0 innings pitched. Erin Hill (12-7) has also pitched over 100 innings and has 86 strikeouts with a 1.58 ERA.
  • Their 1.38 team ERA ranks third in the country and Biggerstaff's ERA ranks seventh.
  • As a team USC Upstate is batting .312 (27th in the NCAA) and are led by Brittany Case, who has a .414 batting average with 12 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBIs.
  • The Spartans will have a Thursday night contest as well, taking on Gardner-Webb in the final game of a three-game set.

 LACROSSE
 

vs. High Point - Saturday, April 13th at 1 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Cupp Stadium)
Records: Radford (3-8, 2-1 Big South) | High Point (10-4, 4-0 Big South)
  • Radford is 2-2 at Cupp Stadium this season with wins over Saint Francis (Pa.) and Gardner-Webb
  • Radford ranks first in the Big South and second in the nation in ground balls per game with 24.73. Only Cincinnati (Coach Hardy's alma mater) has more with 29.62
  • Radford also leads the Big South and ranks 20th in the nation with 14.82 draw controls per game
  • Freshman Katie Bendrick continues to be one of the top defenders not only in the conference, but in the nation. She ranks 12th in the country with 3.27 ground balls per game and 17th with 2.09 caused turnovers per game
  • Senior midfielder Emma Rogers was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week back on April 2, making her the first player in program history to earn the award
  • High Point enters Saturday's game ranked No. 25 in the nation in the ILWCA Coaches Poll
  • The Panthers lead the Big South in assists per game, caused turnovers per game, clearing percentage, points per game, scoring defense, scoring margin, scoring offense, shot percentage, shots per game, shots on goal per game, turnovers per game and win percentage
  • In four Big South games so far, HPU has outscored its opponents by a combined tally of 95-17
  • High Point has already racked up four Big South Offensive Player of the Week awards, four Big South Defensive Player of the Week awards and one Big South Freshman of the Week award
 
 WOMEN'S TENNIS
 

vs. N.C. Central - Saturday, April 13th at 1:30 p.m.
Where: Radford, Va. (Radford Tennis Complex)
Records: Radford (11-8, 5-4 Big South) | N.C. Central (7-11, 3-1 MEAC)
  • Radford is riding a hot wave heading into the final match of the season, including a 7-0 sweep of Bluefield State.
  • The Highlanders have won three straight and look to make it four, welcoming N.C. Central to the NRV on Saturday.
  • The Eagles are 7-11 but have lost two straight to Gardner-Webb and East Carolina.
  • Maru Berghaus leads the team with seven singles victories.
