COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN TUESDAY NIGHT TILT WITH DUKE

DURHAM, N.C. – Down by two the Highlanders had the tying run on first base with no outs in the final frame, but ultimately fell to Duke, 8-6, in the teams' first meeting on Tuesday night at Duke Softball Stadium.

Duke had an 8-6 lead when Talia Douglas reached with an infield single to lead off the seventh inning. Maggie Rowe followed that up with a single up the middle. The Highlanders were in business with nobody out. Sofia Tapia flied out to left field and the Blue Devils made a pitching change. Peyton St. George came in and got the final two batters via strikeouts on her way to her first save of the season.

Radford showed a lot of fight in the contest after falling behind 6-0 in the second inning. Jessie Marvin, who had pitched well in midweek games all season (2.98 ERA and 13 strikeouts) allowed six runs on four hits before exiting.

Creasy made a call to the bullpen with the bases clear and two outs. Durham, N.C., native Hannah Morris came in and closed the door with a foul ball pop out to Hunter Mundy at third. The small swing of momentum carried over into the third inning as the Highlanders hung a crooked letter on the scoreboard.

Destiny Freeman gave Radford its first two runs with a two-run single that plated Ellie Rowe and Sydney Fisher. Douglas cut the lead in half, 6-3, and drove in Freeman with an RBI double.

Mundy cut the Blue Devil lead to two in the fourth inning with a solo home run. The long ball was the junior's 10th of the season and she now leads the team. It was also her fourth home run in the last six games.

Morris came out and made quick work of the Blue Devils in the third and fourth innings. The hometown kid pitched 2.1 scoreless innings until Duke scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-4 lead. Radford was down to its last six outs.

Mundy made note of that and picked up her second hit of the day with a leadoff double. She came around to score on an E. Rowe double, which was also her second hit of the night. The Highlanders started inching their way back into the contest and added another with a run-scoring double by Hannah Medlam in the same inning.

The North paw pitched the sixth inning and allowed a double, but no harm done. She pitched 4.1 innings and only allowed two unearned runs on five hits.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford scored five of its six runs with two outs in the inning and have tallied 53 two-out RBIs this season.
