MUNDY’S GRAND SLAM LIFTS RADFORD TO SERIES OPENING VICTORY OVER HIGH POINT

RADFORD, Va. - It was a back-and-forth affair at Carter Memorial Stadium until the seventh inning when J.D. Mundy's grand slam put the Highlanders on top for good in a 10-7 victory over High Point on Thursday night.

Mundy's team-leading 13th home run of the season came when the Highlanders were down 7-5. He was down to an 0-2 count when Grey Lyttle, the High Point pitcher, missed his spot. The Roanoke, Va., native made him pay and belted the pitch to right center field to put the Highlanders on top, 9-7.

The seventh inning began when Kyle Butler was hit in the head by the first pitch. The senior toughed it out and trotted to first base. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before Spencer Horwitz drew a walk. Andrew Szamski hit a single to left field on the ensuing at-bat to load the bases for Mundy.

High Point struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning. Radford answered when it was their time to step up to the plate with four runs on three hits. Matt Roth and Straton Podaras each picked up RBIs, while David Bryant and Szamski scored on an error by the first baseman with two outs.

After the Panthers regained the lead in the fourth inning, Horwitz hit a solo home run that was tailing towards foul territory but went just inside the foul pole for a round-tripper. His ninth home run of the season tied the game at five.

Zack Ridgely, who pitched five innings, is now the career record holder for innings pitched at Radford. He has pitched 316.0 innings and surpassed Justin Tubb who threw 313.1 innings.

The redshirt senior turned it over to Austin Gerber to begin the sixth. The junior was only able to throw 0.1 innings and exited with a pair of runners on. The two runners eventually scored on a wild pitch and a double steal. That gave the Panthers a 7-5 lead through five and a half innings, which would change when Mundy stepped to the plate in the seventh.

Radford added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Cameron Fritz, who had already thrown 2.2 innings, stranded the go-ahead run at the plate to earn his sixth win of the season. The senior had a little help from Podaras who picked of the runner at first for the final out of the game.

STAT OF THE GAME
Mundy's lone hit of the night was arguably the biggest hit he has had all season. It was his second grand slam as a Highlander – the first came against Presbyterian on March 16. Butler, Horwitz and Szamski all scored on both of the junior's grand slams.
