RADFORD TAKES THE SERIES AGAINST HIGH POINT WITH 10-4 WIN ON SENIOR DAY

RADFORD, Va. – A six-run sixth inning put the Radford baseball team in front for good as it earned a 10-4 victory to clinch the series over High Point at Carter Memorial Stadium on Senior Day.

The Highlanders finish the 2019 regular season with an overall record of 29-25 including a 19-8 record in the Big South. Their strong run through conference play earned them the No. 2 seed in next week's Big South Tournament which will be played at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C.

With the game knotted at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Radford got a one-out walk from Matt Roth and a pinch hit single from Jimmy Goldsmith to set the table for a rally. Colby Higgerson forced the go-ahead run across the plate on a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed and the Highlanders were off to the races from there.

Spencer Horwitz drilled a two-run double down the right field line, Andrew Szamski hit a sacrifice fly, J.D. Mundy went against the shift to line an RBI double to left center field, and David Bryant put an exclamation mark on the end of the inning with an RBI single into center field. The offensive tear put the Highlanders well in front by a score of 8-2.

The Panthers (23-25, 14-13 Big South) made a dent with two runs in the seventh, but the Highlanders answered back with two runs in the eighth on a David Bryant fielder's choice and a Straton Podaras RBI double.

Starting with Brandon Donovan, Radford's pitching staff did a great job keeping High Point in check. Donovan allowed just two runs while striking out a pair over 4.1 innings and was relieved by Derek Domecq who tossed a scoreless frame. Cody Boone then got the call from the bullpen and ultimately earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the year. Ryan Bywaters and Graham Firoved were the final two relief pitchers to see action and they saw the game out.

It was a complete team effort at the plate as eight different Highlanders picked up at least one hit and seven drove in at least one run. Horwitz (3-4, R, 2 RBI) and Podaras (3-5, R, RBI) led the way while Kyle Butler (2-3, 2 R, 2 BB) and Mundy (2-3, R, RBI, 2 BB) also had multi-hit games.

The defense finished off the weekend without a committing an error for the entire series. Radford has now gone back-to-back conference series without a single error called against them after a solid performance at UNC Asheville last weekend.
