RADFORD FALLS TO CHARLESTON SOUTHERN IN EXTRA INNINGS

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A five-run 13th inning was the difference maker in Radford's opening game of the Big South Conference Championship on Wednesday that saw the Highlanders fall, 8-3, in extra innings to Charleston Southern.

The Buccaneers plated five runs on four hits in the 13th and Radford was looking to answer but could only get one baserunner aboard before the final out. The Highlanders had already responded once in extra innings, doing it one inning prior after Charleston Southern took a 3-2 advantage in the 12th thanks to a CSU solo home run.

Straton Podaras kicked things off with a one-out double down the right field line. David Bryant drove him in with a single to center field that tied the game at three. One pitch later, Bryant took off to second and put himself into scoring position. He didn't make it any further as a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

Zack Ridgely gave it his all on the mound but fell one out short of a complete game. He pitched a season-high 8.2 innings with four strikeouts and was one inning away from a shutout. The senior had a 2-0 lead going into the ninth inning until an RBI double and a bloop RBI single that fell about two feet from foul territory in right field tied things at two. He gave way to Cameron Fritz who got out of the inning with a strikeout.

Radford struck first when J.D. Mundy plated Andrew Szamski with a double to right field in the third inning. The Highlanders added to their 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Colby Higgerson drove in Bryant with a single to center field.

The inning continued and Radford had the bases loaded with no outs but couldn't get any more runs to cross the plate and left the bases full. That was just three of the 15 runners the Highlanders left stranded in the game.

Podaras and Bryant each picked up three hits on the day and Bryant added an RBI. Higgerson was the only other Highlander with a multi-hit day and he also drove in a run. Fritz, Bruce Hudson and Cody Boone all made an appearance on the mound. The defense also turned three double plays and didn't make an error for the entire game.
