TINSLEY TAKES GOLD TO LEAD HIGHLANDERS ON DAY TWO OF BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Taylor Tinsley took home a gold medal in the high jump to lead the Radford track & field team on the second day of the 2019 Big South Outdoor Championships.

The sophomore cruised into the finals, clearing every bar from 1.50 meters to 1.58 meters on each of her first attempts. Tinsley finally encountered a challenge when the bar was raised to 1.61 meters and then 1.64 meters, but she made it over both of those as well. The only height all three finalists failed to clear was 1.67 meters, but Tinsley was given the tiebreaker and first place.

Picking up a massive five points with a fourth place finish for the Highlanders was freshman Kayland Bond, who shaved a full 10 seconds off her previous best to record a PR of 11:03.38 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The time ranks as the second-fastest in school history with Brittany Christian's time of 11:03.33 from April 15, 2010 standing just barely in front of her.

Both Chancey Gunnell and Karah Foster earned a spot in the 400-meter finals thanks to solid times in the prelims. Gunnell was the first in the entire field to cross the finish line, posting a monster PR of 55.58 seconds which is the fifth-fastest in program history.

Then in the 100-meter dash, both La'Tisha Chambers and Kierra Henderson finished top-8 to advance to the finals. Henderson grabbed a personal record of 12.00 seconds flat to put herself in good position heading into Friday.

Chloe Phillips was strong in the 800 meters, setting a new personal record of 2:19.84 in the race.

After entering the day in seventh place for the heptathlon, Kiara Price was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the event due to injury following the long jump.
