RADFORD RALLIES BUT FALLS SHORT AGAINST ELON

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's soccer team had some late chances come up short in a 2-1 loss to Elon on Thursday night at Cupp Stadium.

The Phoenix handed the Highlanders their first loss of the season, but it didn't come without some late drama. Down 2-1 with 6:30 left to play, Radford had a free kick from 35 yards out. The ball was played into the box and knocked around when three different Highlanders took a rip at it. However, none of the chances found the back of the net.

The best chance the Highlanders had to tie was in the 88th minute when a ball was played to Gabi Paupst in the middle of the field. The junior was looking for her third score of the season that would've tied the match at two. She dribbled the ball into the 18-yard box and took a shot that went a little high trying to chip it over the keeper. That was one of Radford's nine shots in the second half.

One of the Highlander shots found the back of the net in the 54th minute when Alexeis Kirnos was racing down the right side of the field and played the ball to Nelia Perez about 24 yards from the goal. The senior took one touch and ripped a shot that went perfectly past the Phoenix keeper and in for the goal. That negated Elon's first half goal and tied the match at one.

The Phoenix battled back and scored off a corner kick in the 67th minute. Hailey Tucker kicked the ball into the box and Hannah Doherty headed it towards the net. It fell just short but right to the feet of Taylor Paradoski with a wide-open goal. She finished the shot and gave Elon the 2-1 lead.

Radford led the match with 12 shots – only three on goal – compared to Elon's 11. However, the Phoenix had six land on target. Courtenay Kaplan, who played all of the first half, tallied three saves and Lexi Dean, who played all of the second, had one.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

QUOTABLE
"I think in the end we were unfortunate to lose this one," Ben Sohrabi said. "I thought we played well for most of the match and had good possession. We really responded well by coming back and scoring to tie it up. They ended up scoring on a set piece and that can't happen in tight games, so we need to better with that."

UP NEXT
Radford will have a quick turnaround with a match on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m., against East Carolina inside Cupp Stadium.
