RADFORD FALLS TO LIBERTY IN SEASON OPENER

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's soccer team fell to Liberty, 2-1, in the season opener at Cupp Stadium on Friday night.

The Highlanders fell victim to a late first half goal that set the Flames apart, 2-1. Radford struck first, however, just 16 minutes into the match. Pape Oumar Gueye took three consecutive crosses until he connected with Amadou Macky Diop for a score. He crossed it from the right side of the field into the left side of the box. The ball found its way to Diop, who headed it to the right of the goalkeeper and into the goal giving Radford a 1-0 lead.

Just 14 minutes later Liberty tied the match on a penalty kick by Jordan Barbara and took the lead in the 43rd minute. After a cross attempt ricocheted off a Radford defender, it bounced right to Sebastian Valdez, who was inside the eight-yard box. He kicked it to the right and just past the outstretched Sam Farrell, which gave the Flames a 2-1 lead.

The chippy first half that saw three yellow cards continued the hostile style of play in the second with five yellows, totaling eight in the match. Radford had plenty of scoring opportunities in the second half and the first came just seven minutes into the half. Gueye set up for a penalty kick after a Liberty foul was committed inside the penalty box. The juniors kick hit the right post and bounced back into play, right to Patrick Siczek. He lined up for a shot, but it sailed past the goal.

Radford led the way with 16 shots and nine of them came in the second half. Diop had half of the Highlanders shots and almost had his second goal of the contest in the 87th minute. He made a move past the defender and raced inside the 18-yard box on the right side of the field. The sophomore saw an open lane and fired a shot that was saved by the diving Brogan Engbers in goal. The Highlanders took two more shots in the dwindling minutes, but none were one target.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford placed 17 players on the pitch in the season opener, including five newcomers. Two of the novices were in the starting lineup in Octavio Ocampo and Baptiste Fousse.
