MEN’S SOCCER SCORES FOUR UNANSWERED, STUNS UNCG IN OVERTIME

RADFORD, Va. – After trailing by three goals at the half, the Radford men's soccer team erased the deficit and picked up a 4-3 victory against UNCG in overtime on Monday night at Cupp Stadium.

Amadou Macky Diop netted the game-winner in the 95th minute. Dondre Robinson played some defense and took the ball away from a UNCG defender just outside the 18-yard box and found Diop racing in the middle of the field towards the goal. Diop hit it off his right heel from 12 yards out to the right of the diving keeper. Diop's shot found the back of the net for his third score of the night and the celebration began.

The Highlanders would not have gotten there without Octavio Ocampo's impressive shot that tied the match at three in the 85th minute. The freshman noticed the keeper playing up and fired a lofting shot from the left sideline, close to midfield. Ricky Zarri, the UNCG keeper, took a couple of steps backwards towards the goal until he realized it was too late. Zarri made a last-ditch effort with a jump, but the ball was placed perfectly and went over his outstretched hand and into the goal.

It was all Spartans in the first half and the scoring began early as Micah Albert scored in the sixth minute. He took advantage of a poor defensive stand from the Highlanders and It wasn't the only time he took advantage of it. The Spartans had a 2-0 lead when Albert scored his second goal of the night in the 32nd minute.

The Highlanders didn't hang their heads when going into the locker room at the half. The Spartans changed the game plan in the second half and played a more conservative, defensive-heavy style. Radford took advantage and fired 16 shots in the second half. Diop was the first one to find the back of the net for Radford. He headed in a corner kick from Mouhameth Thiam in the 65th minute to get the Highlanders on the board.

Diop wasn't done scoring and gave the Highlanders a little more momentum with another goal in the 84th minute cutting the deficit to one, 3-2. This time it came off a free kick from the other side of the field from Pape Oumar Gueye. A little less than a minute went by until the Highlanders tied the match.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Diop took nine shots and scored three goals, both career-highs for the sophomore. It's the first hat trick from a Highlander since Oct. 14, 2017 when Kieran Roberts netted four in a 5-3 win over Gardner-Webb.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Radford took 24 shots, which is the most since Nov. 8, 2017 when the Highlanders took the same amount against Presbyterian. 11 of the 24 shots landed on goal. Diop had nine of the 24 shots, while Robinson tallied four. Thiam, in his second career outing, picked up a multi-assist game with two.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

QUOTABLE
"I said it before at the beginning of preseason," Bryheem Hancock said. "This group is different. It's a group that, no matter what, thinks they can get the win and they showed that tonight. It was a little harder than what we wanted but give credit to a UNCG team that was up for the match. I really love the way the bench was into it, rooting on the guys on the field but at the end of the day it's about what team scores more goals."

UP NEXT
The Highlanders will travel to Wilmington – weather pending – for a match against UNCW on Friday at 7 p.m., for the first game of the UNCW Springhill Suites Classic.
