HIGHLANDERS EARN 2-2 DRAW IN WEATHER-SHORTENED MATCH

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's soccer team played in its second straight double-overtime match of the season, earning a 2-2 draw against the NJIT Highlanders Sunday afternoon at Cupp Stadium. The match was called due to lightning in the 102nd minute.

Liam Deacy and Mouhameth Thiam each netted their first goal of the season for Radford, which earned its second consecutive draw and moved to 1-2-2 on the season. Rene White scored both goals for NJIT, which remains unbeaten at 2-0-3.

Radford had its chances early in the game but it was NJIT who opened the scoring in the 14th minute, as Andrew Nino fed White in the box, leading to a deflected shot by White that beat Joseba Incera for his fifth goal of the season. It took Radford less than 17 minutes to even the score as Pape Oumar Gueye's shot hit off NJIT goalkeeper Samuel Reisgys, leaving an easy tap-in goal for Deacy to tie the match at one goal apiece. Deacy's goal was the last shot on goal for either side in the first half, as the teams took a 1-1 score into the intermission.

NJIT nearly took the lead minutes into the second half, but Incera stood tall and made a save on Thomas Radon's shot to keep the score level. After that, the home side controlled most of the next 20 minutes, taking five shots and having three corner kicks before breaking through to take its first lead of the match. Thiam took advantage of one-on-one marking outside the box, beating his defender on the left and slotting his shot above the goalkeeper's arm to put Radford in front in the 65th minute.

The rest of the game was a chippy affair, with five yellow cards being issued in the last 37 minutes of action. NJIT took advantage of its best opportunity in the half, as White scored his second of the match in the 81st minute, taking a pass inside the box and slotting his shot past Incera into the bottom corner. White's goal was the last major opportunity for either team in regulation, as the clash of the Highlanders went to overtime even at 2-2.

The teams managed just one shot apiece in the overtime session, as White had a shot blocked for NJIT and Baye Djibril Faye sailed a shot high for Radford late in the first overtime. Weather became a concern in the second in the second overtime, as the game was ultimately called due to lightning with eight minutes left on the clock.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Thiam led Radford with three shots, which tied for most in the match. His goal in the 65th minute gave Radford its first lead since its win over UNCG.
