CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – An early Virginia goal thwarted the Radford men's soccer team's quest for its first-ever win over a Top-5 opponent, as the fifth-ranked Cavaliers held on for a 1-0 win Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium.
The lone goal of the match came in the fifth minute when the Cavaliers' Daniel Steedman beat
Joseba Incera with a close-range shot that the freshman goalkeeper had no chance of stopping.
After Virginia's early goal, the Highlanders settled into the match and had multiple first-half chances, but a header by
Thure Ilgner went wide right and a long-range shot by
Pape Oumar Gueye was saved by the Cavaliers' goalkeeper, Colin Shutler.
Virginia started the second half with a pair of chances that Incera denied point-blank, including a shot inside the six-yard box, to keep the Radford deficit at one goal. The Highlanders came back in the later stages of the half with opportunities, but couldn't find a way to beat Shutler in goal. Ilgner's late chance from long range sailed over the crossbar and
Dondre' Robinson had an opportunity in front of the goal, but couldn't control the ball off the pass and his attempt went left. The Cavaliers spent most of the final five minutes on the attack to see out the game and escape with a 1-0 win.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Despite going down early, Radford managed as many shot attempts (nine) and shots on goal (four) as Virginia did throughout the 90 minutes.
