BUIES CREEK, N.C.—The Radford men's soccer team opened Big South conference play against Campbell Saturday night in an overtime game, posting a 2-1 decision.
The Highlanders gave up an early goal to the Camel's Jacquel in the 12th minute. He worked his way through the tight Radford defense and on the first touch found his way around goalkeeper
Joseba Incera for the contest's first goal of the evening.
In the second half, the Highlanders ramped up their presence on both sides of the pitch. This increase in activity ultimately led to an increase in productivity, seeing
Victor Valls' one on two offering from the top of the box find its way to the back of the net to tie the game at one all.
For the reminder of the second half, neither team could find their way past one another. In the waning moments a would-be go ahead goal from
Patrick Siczek seemed like it would seal the deal, but was blocked by the Camel defense. Campbell returned the scare, threatening in the final moments of the second half with a shot of their own. However, the shot found its way directly into the hands of goalkeeper Incera. The on time save would force the game into overtime.
Radford opened the extra 10 minutes with the first possession. Campbell gained control and sent up a pair of shots that were wide and saved. A corner kick from Matt Lock sent up Jacquel for the game ending goal, his second of the game.
The Highlanders did not go down without a fight posting six shots in regulation and saving four would-be Camel goals during the match. Radford also found themselves the owners of five corner kicks.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Valls notched his first goal of the 2019 season, making himself one of seven Highlanders with at least one goal this campaign.
