STIFLING DEFENSE CARRIES RADFORD TO 67-55 VICTORY OVER LONGWOOD

FARMVILLE, Va. – Led by a stifling defense and Travis Fields, Jr.'s season-high 21 points, the Radford men's basketball team defeated Longwood, 67-55, on Thursday night inside Willett Hall.

Fields Jr., racked up 16 of his 21 points and only missed two field goal attempts in the first half. His second miss came on a last second 3-pointer at the first half buzzer. He went 7-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-4 from long range and finished the game 9-for-13 with a trio of 3-pointers.

The Highlanders (12-9, 7-2 Big South) found themselves down 13-9 with a little less than 11 minutes to play in the first half. After a quiet half since scoring the game's opening basket, Fields Jr., broke the silence with five points on two straight possessions that eventually led to an 11-0 Radford run over two and a half minutes. The script was flipped and Radford clung to a seven-point lead, 20-13.

Radford maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the half and took an eight-point lead into the locker room. The Lancers were held without a point for the final three minutes of the first half.

The Highlanders shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the first half and held the Lancers to just 26.1 percent. Longwood was only able to get six field goal conversions – five of them from beyond the arc.

Longwood (7-15, 2-7 Big South) quickly cut the lead to two with a pair of 3-pointers to open the first four minutes of the second half. The Highlanders turned up the defensive intensity and held the Lancers to only one field goal conversion over the next 4:34. That intensity carried over to the offensive end of the court where the Highlanders went on a 13-3 run to take a 43-31 lead. Devin Hutchinson and Josiah Jeffers had eight of the 13 points during the spurt.

The Lancers tried to scrap their way back into the game but could only get as close as seven points midway through the second half, 46-39. However, Radford scored nine unanswered and took a 55-39 advantage with 5:10 to play.

Radford increased the lead to 16 with three minutes to play and eventually went up by 17 – its largest lead of the game – with 38 seconds left on the clock thanks to a Devonnte Holland free throw. Holland ended the game with a season-high 12 points and picked up seven rebounds.

The Highlanders held the Lancers to a 31.6 field goal percentage for the entirety of the game and only 18 made shots from the floor. 14 of the Lancers' 18 made shots were from beyond the arc. Longwood heaved 41 3-pointers and shot 34.1 percent from long range.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford outrebounded the Lancers 42-29 for the full 40 minutes of play. It's the largest margin the Highlanders have outrebounded a Division I opponent in a game all season. 34 of the rebounds came on the defensive end as Radford had an 11-rebound edge in that department.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Carlik Jones was held to just four first half points but erupted for 12 points in the second half totaling for 16. He ended with a team-high seven assists and went 9-for-10 from the foul line. Jeffers' six points was the most he's scored all season after knocking down two 3-pointers. Radford shot 45.8 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent from the 3-point line. The 55 points allowed by the Highlanders is the lowest in any conference game this season. Longwood's Juan Munoz, who leads the team in scoring during conference play, totaled 17 points after leading all players with five 3-point makes.

POST OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"Our defense did a really good job of staying in the gaps and not letting them get in the paint," Mike Jones said. "I thought it frustrated them in the first half. In the second half they stopped trying to drive as much and they were ready to catch and shoot so we had to make an adjustment because they knocked down a couple of 3's right out of the gate. We were ready for them to drive the ball but it's because we established that we weren't giving up those drives in the first half. That made a big difference in the game."
