RADFORD RALLIES IN REGULATION, TOPS CHARLESTON SOUTHERN IN OVERTIME

RADFORD, Va.Carlik Jones scored 12 of Radford's final 14 points in regulation, but none were bigger than his 20-foot jump shot in the corner as time expired to send the game into overtime in the Highlanders' 77-74 win over Charleston Southern. That shot, that play, that sequence almost never happened.

Down by two, Radford (13-9, 8-2 Big South) had a chance to tie the game or win it all with 2.5 seconds on the clock and the ball being inbound in front of the Highlander bench. The ball was under thrown and bounced out of bounds last touched by Radford. All seemed to be lost with 1.4 seconds left.

Charleston Southern's Travis Anderson was under Radford's basket and heaved the ball all the way down the court, but nobody was there to receive the ball. The ball bounced harmlessly out of bounds with no player on either team touching it. By rule, the ball changed possession and was taken out at the same spot of original throw in (under Radford's scoring basket). There was hope for the Highlanders.

With the crowd on its feet, Travis Fields, Jr., found Jones in corner. Jones, falling to his right, took the shot as the buzzer went off. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native's shot found the bottom of the net as everyone donning the red and white erupted with joy. The two-point basket tied the game at 67 and an extra five minutes were added to the clock for Radford's first overtime game this season.

Radford took the lead in overtime thanks to a pair of Devonnte Holland free throws, then Charleston Southern scored four straight to take a 71-69 lead. Jones and Holland hit big-time jump shots to give Radford the lead once more, 73-71. On the ensuing possession Deontaye Buskey hit a 3-pointer that gave the Bucs a one-point edge. Fields Jr., had the 'anything you can do, I can do better' mentality and hit a 3-pointer to make it a two-point game with 1:07 remaining.

CSU (11-11, 5-5 Big South) and Radford each traded a missed 3-pointer but Devine Eke got the offensive board and nearly missed an and-1 opportunity that would've virtually sealed the game. Eke went to the line with 19 seconds on the clock and his team up, 76-74. Needing just one free throw, Eke converted on his final attempt. Charleston Southern was looking to send the game to a second overtime and held for the final shot. Phlandrous Fleming Jr., threw up a step-back desperation 3-pointer from the logo with two seconds left. His shot fell short and the Highlanders came away with another gritty victory.

Overall, the game saw 13 ties and 18 lead changes and it all began from the start. Charleston Southern led by as many as seven points in the first half but the Highlanders closed the gap and eventually took a 30-29 lead at halftime. Donald Hicks had eight of his 16 points in the first half, which led all players at the time.

Radford fell victim to an 8-2 run just 1:16 into the second half that saw the Buccaneers take a five-point lead, 37-32. The Highlanders went on a run of their own scoring 14 of the next 16 points to claim a 46-39 advantage – its largest of the game – with 12:17 to play.

The Highlanders got a little cold from the floor over the next six minutes and Charleston Southern knocked down five field goals and seven free throws en route to a 57-53 lead. Then Jones took over the game for the final six minutes of regulation.

Jones ended with 28 points, five rebounds and four assists. 22 of his 28 came in the final two periods. He scored 20 in the second half and only missed one shot (9-for-10). Donald Hicks chipped in eight points in the half shooting 3-for-5 from the field. He added six rebounds to his 16 total points.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"It was a great game. We knew [Charleston Southern] was good coming in, and by the grace of God, we found a way to win it," Mike Jones said. "Down the stretch, when the game was on the line, when it was crunch time, I thought our guys really locked in on both ends of the floor. With the exception of one or two possessions, I thought we were really solid. We got the things we wanted on the offensive end, and we were able to get stops, for the most part, and finish it with a rebound on the defensive end. I'll tell you what, we snatched defeat from the jaws tonight, we were very fortunate."

UP NEXT
Radford will enjoy a week off before beginning the second stretch of conference play with a trip to High Point on tap on Saturday at 7 p.m.
