Williams and LaLonde With Career Highs at North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Highlanders (0-1) returned to Carmichael Arena and commenced the 2020-21 season against the [RV] Tar Heels (1-0) on Wednesday afternoon, falling 90-61. Radford's offense was paced by senior leader Tina Lindenfeld as well as career highs from Ariel Williams and Rachel LaLonde. 
 
After missing the first attempt of the game, North Carolina's offense got out to a hot start and concluded the first half shooting above 45 percent from every spot on the court. In the final 74 seconds of the second period, Radford was able to score eight points on a pair of three-pointers from freshmen Ashley Tudor and Destinee Marshall in addition to two free throws from Lindenfeld. At the intermission, the Tar Heels' lead over the Highlanders would sit at 46-30 thanks to Radford's perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe.
 
Momentum in the third period belong to the Highlanders as they were able to close the scoring gap to the smallest margin of the game, 10 points. Williams initiated the offense after being sent to the free throw line by way of her activity on the defensive end. LaLonde followed suit shorty after, on a made jumper from the elbow. The duo clipped off a total of 14 points with some help from a three-pointer by Lindenfeld to bring Radford within 10 at the midway point of the period. 
 
North Carolina's midrange game and ability to get to the free throw line eventually propelled them ahead of Radford in the fourth period. The Tar Heels ended the contest with six in double figures, led by 19 points from Deja Kelly.
 
All eight student-athletes for head coach Mike McGuire scored in the game in addition to the freshman trio scoring at least three points. Williams and LaLonde tallied career highs in almost every offensive category, ending the game with a combined 21 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists in their first collegiate starts as Highlanders. Taiye Johnson joined the pair in the occasion as the starting center for Radford. 
                                                                                                                                             
STAT OF THE GAME
The last time these teams faced off the Highlanders were held to only 46 points. The 2020-21 team was able to surpass that mark shooting above 30 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free throw line.

NEW FACES 
McGuire implemented a rotation that saw Tudor as the first off the bench for Radford. The freshman trio played integral minutes and each scored their first collegiate points in the game. Tudor paced the core with 27 minutes, five rebounds, and 11 points. Marshall logged 16 minutes as the backup point guard with five points and an assist. Kyanna Morgan rounded out the scoring with a three-pointer in the final period and a pair of rebounds. 
 
UP NEXT 
Radford will travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday, Nov. 29 and face the No.6 ranked Wolfpack of N.C. State at 2:00 p.m.
