Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Radford Falls Late In Close Match to Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford men's basketball team fell to Presbyterian, 65-63, on Thursday afternoon after a missed last-second shot.

Down two with eight seconds left in regulation, Quinton Morton-Robertson had a good look with an open lane but failed to convert the tough shot as time expired. Nonetheless, every time Presbyterian pulled ahead, Radford remained in it with key shots down the stretch.

After falling behind 14-7 early in the first half, Shaquan Jules sparked a 9-0 run with an and-one conversion after getting fouled on the basket. The run gave Radford its first lead of the game, 16-14, with 10:54 to play.

Presbyterian then jumped out to an eight-point lead over the next five minutes, but a pair of 3-pointers by Morton-Robertson and Dravon Mangum highlighted an 8-0 run that tied the game at 27 with 3:25 left in the opening half. The Highlanders scored four of the final seven points of the half for a slight, 31-30, edge at halftime.

Into the second half the Highlanders and Blue Hose continued to trade shots as neither side pulled away by more than four points for a majority of the half. Mangum paced the team, shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the second half, totaling 11 points and grabbing three rebounds.

At the 3:15 mark Presbyterian grabbed their largest lead of the half thanks to a 3-pointer which put the score at 61-55. Lipscomb responded with a three of his own though to cut the lead in half and keep the Highlanders close.

With 42 seconds remaining, Walker converted a clutch and-one to bring the Highlanders within just two points of the lead. Presbyterian was unable to convert their final possession into points which led to Morton-Robertson's layup that rolled out and sealed the game.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders gave up just four second-chance points in the second half compared to the eight they gave up in the first-half, holding Presbyterian to just five offensive rebounds late in the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Djonkam recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards. Morton-Robertson also continued his hot shooting notching his sixth game of the year with a 3-pointer, totaling five across the doubleheader against Presbyterian this week. Fah'Mir Ali added 12 points of his own which is the fifth time this season he has recorded double-digit points.

TWEET OF THE GAME

QUOTABLE
"We came out good and grabbed a lead at the half today," Mike Jones said. "Our defense was good, and our offense did a good job of getting that lead at that time. We just have to continue to learn the system of back-to-back games."

UP NEXT
It will be a quick turnaround for the Highlanders as they welcome Commonwealth foe, Hampton for a two-game series beginning Monday at 6 p.m. The second game is slated for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
