RADFORD FALLS TO ELON IN SEASON OPENER

ELON, N.C. – The Radford softball team fell to Elon, 5-1, on Friday in the 2020 season opener as part of the Phoenix Invitational.

Radford (0-1) was only able to score one run and it came from the bat of Sydney Fisher. The junior had a 17-game reached base streak heading into the season opener. She extended that streak in the third inning with a double to center field. Autumn Slemaker, one of three freshmen to earn their first collegiate hit, scored from first for Radford's first run of the 2020 campaign.

Elon (4-1) scored a pair of runs in the first inning off the bat of Keagan Goldwait to take an early 2-0 advantage. Fisher cut the lead in half with the double in the third but the Phoenix answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to control a three-run lead.

The Highlanders were looking to strike in the fourth with a pair of runners on and two outs but a foul ball pop out to the Elon first basemen ended the threat. After Elon tacked on another run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead, the Highlanders couldn't muster up a comeback.

However, Radford showed some fight getting four runners aboard in the final three innings. The Highlanders had the tying run on deck in the seventh inning with two outs but Kenna Quinn's fourth strikeout of the game ended the night.

Jessie Marvin (0-1) tossed a complete game and led both pitchers with five strikeouts. She surrendered five runs – only two earned – and faced 32 batters. Like Elon's Quinn, Marvin allowed nine hits.

Talia Douglas gave Radford its first hit of the new season in the second inning. She went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Freshmen Riley Oakes and Madison Canady joined Slemaker in the hit column for their first hit in a Radford uniform. Oakes notched a pair of singles for the first multi-hit game of her career.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders racked up nine hits in the season opener. It's the second straight season Radford tallied nine hits in the opener. It's the first loss to open a season since 2016 when the Highlanders lost to Penn State, 8-0. However, Radford finished the 2016 season 35-26 and was one game away from the Big South Tournament Final.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Fisher gave Radford its only extra-base hit of the game with the RBI double in the third. She was one of three Highlanders with a multi-hit game. The top three hitters in the batting order had five of the nine hits, while the upper fifth had seven of the nine.
