FRESHMEN LEAD RADFORD TO SATURDAY SWEEP OVER SIENA AND MORGAN STATE

ELON, N.C. – Freshmen Riley Oakes and Madison Canady led the way for the Radford softball team as it picked up a Saturday sweep with a 7-4 win over Siena and a 10-0 shutout over Morgan State in six innings on day two of the Phoenix Invitational.

Oakes struck out seven in her debut on the rubber against Siena, while Canady drove in five runs in the victory over Morgan State. Radford (2-1) combined for 23 hits and 17 runs through 13 innings on Saturday. Siena (0-1) and Morgan State (0-1) had eight total errors as each team committed four in its season opener.

GAME ONE
The first inning was key for the Highlanders against the Saints as Oakes (1-0) struck out the side in her debut in the circle and the offensive scored three in the bottom half.

Sydney Fisher led off the inning with a walk then stole second. Oakes singled to put two on with no outs. After a pair of strikeouts, Talia Douglas drove in Fisher with a single to center field to give Radford its first lead of the 2020 season.

Hunter Mundy followed that up with a single of her own that plated Oakes to extend the lead to 2-0. Douglas scored on a throwing error by the Saint catcher to give Radford its third run of the inning.

Oakes was dealing as she picked up three more strikeouts through the next two innings and had still yet to give up a hit. Another Highlander run scored in the bottom of the third thanks to Siena's second error of the game.

Radford tacked on two more runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Douglas drove in her second run of the game and finished the contest 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored. The six-run lead proved to be a difference maker as Oakes, who gave up her first collegiate hit in the fourth, allowed four runs to score in the fifth inning on four hits. Three of the runs were scored off the bat of Taylor Rhinehart with a two-out double that pulled Siena within two, 6-4.

Fisher tallied her third of the game and drove in Destiny Freeman, who led off the inning with an infield single to give Radford another insurance run and a 7-4 lead. Oakes ended her first start retiring six of the final seven batters she faced and picked up her seventh strikeout.

The Oviedo, Fla., native only allowed five hits and three walks in her pitching debut. The seven strikeouts are the most a freshman pitcher has had in a debut since before the 2014 season.

STAT OF THE GAME
Of the seven runs scored, four of them were driven in. All four of Radford's RBIs came with two outs in each inning. Radford went 7-of-14 with two outs against the Saints.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The top two hitters in the batting order, Fisher and Oakes, had five of the team's 10 hits. The Highlanders had a .333 batting average and drew four walks. Offensively, Oakes had her second multi-hit game of the season going 2-for-4, as well as Fisher (3-for-3) and Douglas (2-for-4). Fisher had the team's only extra-base hit. She and Douglas also scored a pair of runs.

TWEET OF THE GAME

GAME TWO
Radford exploded for five runs on five hits in the sixth inning to take a commanding lead with the eight-run rule in effect. This came one inning after Madison Canady's three-run home run – the first long ball for any Highlander this season – gave Radford a 5-0 lead.

The sixth inning began with Riley Oakes' third consecutive multi-hit game – a single to third base. She stole second and scored on a Talia Douglas double down the right field line. After a foul out that moved Douglas to third, Canady reached on a fielder's choice and Douglas scored on the play putting Radford ahead 7-0.

After the Bears second baseman committed her second error of the inning, Destiny Freeman took advantage with a two-run single. It was her first two RBIs of the season and it put Radford ahead 9-0. After Freeman stole second, Cam Andersen drove her home with a single up the middle and earned her first collegiate RBI. The Andersen RBI gave Radford its fifth run of the inning and created a 10-0 hole that Morgan State couldn't climb out of as Sarah Smith came in and shut the door with a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

Smith (1-0) was called on with just one out in the first inning. After Andersen started in the circle for the first time in her career, she was only able to get one out and walked three batters. Smith entered with the bases loaded and got some help from the defense with a 5-2-3 inning-ending double play.

The senior got into a groove and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. It was the only hit of the game for Morgan State. It came with two outs and did no harm in the game. She struck out three and was able get nine ground outs.

Canady began the game with an RBI single in the first inning that gave Radford a 1-0 lead. She then followed that up by driving in a run in the third inning with some hustle to beat out what would've been an inning-ending double play. Her strong effort put the Highlanders up 2-0 and gave her the first multi-RBI game of her career.

She wasn't done driving in runs as her long ball in the fifth inning gave her five for the game. It's the most by a Highlander so far on the young season and no freshman has had five RBIs since before the 2013 campaign.

STAT OF THE GAME
Andersen and Douglas had a triple each in their multi-hit games. It was the first time since April 15, 2017 that Radford hit multiple triples in a game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
After hitting .333 in the first game, the Highlanders hit .419 against the Bears. Radford went 8-for-20 (.400) with runners on base and five of the hits came with runners in scoring position. Five batters had multi-hit contests for Radford but no hitter had more than two. Douglas scored four runs, which tied a career-high and drove in one run. Slemaker also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 game. Sofia Tapia tallied her first hit of the year – a double – and she drew two walks.

QUOTABLE
For the second day out, the team bounced back to grab two good wins," Creasy said. "They got it done in the circle, on defense and with the bats. We saw good things happen up and down the lineup as the first game nerves are fading. Growth is essential for this group and today's play moved us in the right direction."

UP NEXT
Radford will conclude the Phoenix Invitational with a solo game on Sunday. The day will begin at 9:30 a.m., when the Highlanders take on the Saints.
