MARVIN AND TAPIA LIFT RADFORD OVER SIENA IN FINAL DAY OF PHOENIX INVITATIONAL

ELON, N.C. – A gem in the circle by Jessie Marvin and a clutch two-out hit by Sofia Tapia lifted the Radford softball team over Siena, 1-0, on Sunday morning to conclude the Phoenix Invitational.

Marvin (1-1) tallied a career-high nine strikeouts in a complete game shutout and Tapia's second hit of the weekend couldn't have come at a better time for the Highlanders (3-1).

Three of the Highlanders' six hits came in the sixth inning. Riley Oakes and Talia Douglas each had one-out hits to put runners aboard, then Hunter Mundy drew a four-pitch walk to put a runner on every base. Freshman Madison Canady came up in a clutch situation and needed a deep fly ball to give Radford the lead.

She hit the ball to left field but it wasn't deep enough to score Oakes from third and resulted in the second out of the inning. It was all up to Tapia. The senior delivered a 3-2 pitch to left field that dropped and Oakes crossed the plate giving Radford the lone run of the game.

Looking to protect the 1-0 lead, Marvin struck out three batters through the final two innings to claim her first win of the season. It wasn't the best start for Marvin as a pair of runners reached in the first inning, followed by a leadoff double in the second from Emma McLaughlin. McLaughlin moved to third via a sac bunt after a Saint drew a walk on the prior at-bat.

Marvin was able to get out of the second inning jam with a lineout to Autumn Slemaker at shortstop for the third out. The junior settled in on the rubber and didn't allow another baserunner until the fifth inning but no harm was done. Marvin had six strikeouts through the first five innings.

Radford didn't get a baserunner aboard until the third inning as Destiny Freeman led off with a double. She moved to third with one-out on a wild pitch but was unable to score as a pair of groundouts ended the threat. The Highlanders had at least one runner on through the final four innings and broke the scoreless game in the sixth.

Taylor Rhinehart (0-2) suffered the loss in the circle for Siena (0-3). She only surrendered four hits and the only run of Sunday's game.

STAT OF THE WEEKEND
After dropping the season opener, Radford bounced back to go 3-1 in its opening weekend. During the Creasy era, the Highlanders have totaled an 11-2 record for their opening weekend contests.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Marvin allowed four hits and only walked two. She was able to get six fly outs and six groundouts along with the nine K's through the 28 batters faced. Oakes scored the lone run of the game and extended her hitting streak to four games. Radford's 2-3-4 hitters had three of the six hits. No team had any player that had more than one hit. Each team left seven runners on base. Sydney Fisher's 20-game reached base steak came to an end on Sunday.

QUOTABLE
"Jessie pitched a great game and the defense carried us when our offense wasn't producing," Creasy said. "It was good to see the team keep the energy, confidence and focus during a tight game."
