RADFORD DEFEATS NORFOLK STATE IN SHORTENED CONTEST

NORFOLK, Va. – The Radford softball team defeated Norfolk State, 5-3, on Thursday afternoon to push its winning streak to four games and earn its first road victory of the season. The game became final after five innings and the two teams were slated to play a second game but it was called off due to impending weather.

Radford (4-1) scored two runs in the top of the third inning to retake the lead for good and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Trailing 2-1, and runners on every base with one out in the third, Madison Canady stepped in. She hit the ball to third and the Spartan third baseman threw it home for the force out. The throw was low and Riley Oakes scored to make it a brand new ballgame.

After a fly ball out, Destiny Freeman was hit by the second pitch of her at-bat. The RBI plate appearance gave Radford a 3-2 lead before a ground out to second ended the inning.

The Highlanders added a couple of insurance runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Canady single with one out that drove home Talia Douglas and a sacrifice fly by Hannah Poole that plated Canady. The pair of runs gave Radford a 5-2 lead before a line out to right field ended the inning.

The insurance runs were big as Norfolk State notched a run in the bottom half of the inning off the bat of Imani Moore. Jessie Marvin tightened up and was able to get out of the inning with just one run allowed. After the bottom of the fifth inning, the game became final due to the weather conditions.

Marvin (2-1) punched out four in five innings of work. She allowed seven hits and four runs to score with 99 pitches thrown. Two of the runs allowed came in the second inning as Loren Hudson plated a pair with a one-out double. That negated a one-run lead by Radford after Tapia scored on an error in the top half of the frame.

STAT OF THE GAME
Norfolk State committed three errors. Radford scored three runs in the innings that the Spartans committed errors.
