RADFORD SPLITS IN OPENING DAY OF PIRATE CLASSIC

NORFOLK, Va. – The Radford softball team dropped a 3-2 contest to Toledo to begin the invitational before topping Sacred Heart, 11-5, to end the day.

Radford (5-2) left eight runners on base against Toledo (4-2) but exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits against Sacred Heart (0-1). Talia Douglas went 4-for-6 in both games with four runs scored and three RBIs. She picked up her third double of the season and first home run.

GAME ONE
After the Highlanders scored a run in the first, the Rockets took a lead with a solo home run in the bottom half of the frame. It was the first home run she has allowed all season long. She walked the first batter of the game she faced.

The next two innings were scoreless by both teams until Destiny Freeman singled up the middle to drive in Douglas, who lead off the fourth with a walk. Freeman's RBI single tied the game at two.

Radford had a golden opportunity in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and one out but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning. Then Toledo looked like they were in good position to take the lead but left a pair stranded in the bottom half of the frame.

It would only be a foreshadowing of what was to come in the next inning for Toledo. The Rockets began the inning with back-to-back singles. Rebekah Yenrick moved the runners over with a sac bunt. Then Samantha Golden drove in the game-winning run with a sac fly to left field.

The Highlanders were poised to make a comeback in the top of the seventh. That almost held true as Radford got the first three runners aboard. However, Douglas lined into a double play for the first two outs and the game ended on a foul out to left field.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Highlanders left eight runners on base during the game and five of the runners were stranded in the final two innings.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Oakes (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on just four hits. The freshman also surrendered three walks and six strikeouts. Offensively she had two hits, while Douglas and Hunter Mundy each had a pair of hits as well.

GAME TWO
The offense fireworks showed up in game two of the day as Radford tallied 14 hits. Five hitters had multi-hit games for the Highlanders and three had scored two runs. Douglas had three RBIs, while Hannah Poole had two as did Sofia Tapia.

Tapia's pair of runs came in the first inning with a single to left field that gave Radford a 2-0 lead. Mundy tacked on to the lead scoring on a fielder's choice off the bat off Freeman. The 3-0 lead lasted until the third inning until Sacred Heart cut into the lead, 3-2.

Douglas and Mundy hit back-to-back yak's in the fifth inning to increase Radford's lead to two, 5-2. It was the pair's first home runs of the season. Madison Canady and Freeman gave Radford a 7-2 lead before the end of the inning.

Amy Petrovic cut into the lead with a three-run home run to left center field in the sixth. That cut the lead to two, 7-5.

Poole hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to straightaway center field. Then Douglas plated her second and third runs of the day. The four run seventh inning gave Radford a six-run cushion as Skyler DeHart came in and closed the door. She earned her first collegiate strikeout.

Hannah Morris (1-0) made her first appearance of the season and tossed three innings in relief. She came into the game with a pair of runners aboard in the fourth inning. The sophomore preserved the lead with a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to Mundy at first.

Sarah Smith began the game and pitched three innings and only allowed two earned runs. Smith and Morris each earned three strikeouts.

STAT OF THE GAME
