MUNDY’S MULTI-HOME RUN GAME HIGHLIGHTS FINAL DAY OF PIRATE CLASSIC

NORFOLK, Va. – The Radford softball team fell in the early going to Hartford, 5-3, but bounced back and took care of business against Youngstown State, 4-0, on Saturday, the Highlanders' final day of the Pirate Classic.

Hunter Mundy and Talia Douglas tore it up offensively for Radford (6-3) and Jessie Marvin shined in her only appearance in the circle. Douglas had two hits and an RBI against Hartford (3-3), while Mundy had a pair of home runs and three RBIs against Youngstown State (3-3). Also in the second game of the day, Marvin pitched a seven inning shutout with only five hits allowed.

GAME ONE
Skyler DeHart made her first start in the circle after an impressive inning on Friday night against Sacred Heart. She was cruising through the first four innings allowing only one walk and facing just 13 batters. The freshman ran into trouble in the fifth.

DeHart allowed two runs to score on three hits in the fifth. That negated a 1-0 lead that came off the bat of Douglas. After a Highlander pitching change the Hawks added a run by scoring on a wild pitch and a two-run homer. The five run fifth inning put Hartford ahead 5-1.

Radford showed some fight scoring a run in the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Sydney Fisher and scored a run in the seventh. Destiny Freeman plated Lauren Maddrey with the Highlanders' fifth double of the game and just one out in the inning.

However, the Highlanders could never tie the contest as the game-tying runs flied out to center field and grounded out to the pitcher in the seventh inning. Radford had 12 hits in the game and left 11 on base.

DeHart (0-1) pitched 4.1 innings and only allowed three runs on four hits and one walk in her first collegiate start. Hannah Morris tossed a scoreless inning for Radford and had the Highlanders' only strikeout.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford had four players with multi-hit games and was led by Fisher who had two doubles. Tapia, Riley Oakes, Douglas and Fisher all had two hits apiece.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
The top third of the lineup had six of Radford's 12 hits. Fisher, Douglas and Freeman all had one RBI each. Julianna Kocenski (1-1) pitched 6.1 innings for Hartford and picked up her first win of the season. No player had a multi-hit game for Hartford but Danielle Rocheleau had two RBIs.

GAME TWO
It was all Mundy and Marvin in game two. Mundy drove in three of the Highlanders' four runs and Marvin was dealing in the circle against the Penguins.

It was Douglas who got things started for Radford. She doubled in Oakes from first after she hit a one-out single to center field. That was the third at-bat of the game. On the fourth at-bat Hunter Mundy took a ball yard down the field line. Her two-run shot gave Radford a 3-0 lead. Radford had every batter on base for through the first four batters.

Mundy was due up again in the third inning. She hit a ball deep to left field that found its way over the fence for her second home run of the game. Her second homer gave Radford a 4-0 lead. It was her first multi-home run game since last season against Hampton.

Meanwhile, Marvin was dealing in the circle. She allowed just one hit in each inning through the first three innings. Then she allowed two in the sixth but got some help on the defensive end as Conchetta Rinaldi was caught up in a pickle and called out due to a base running error.

Marvin (3-1) coasted through an easy seventh inning to her third victory of the year. She ended with five hits allowed and four punch outs in the complete game shutout.

STAT OF THE GAME
Mundy has hit a multi-home run in three of her four seasons as a Highlander. The first came on May 7, 2017 against Winthrop and the second came against Hampton on April 18, 2019.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Fisher had two hits against the Penguins. Mundy's two-hit performance included a pair of runs scored and three RBIs. Oakes, Douglas, Abby Wilson and Autumn Slemaker all had hits for Radford. No player had more than one hit from the Penguins.
