FIVE RUN FIRST INNING PROPELS RADFORD PAST DELAWARE

FAIRFAX, Va. – A five run first inning highlighted the evening as the Radford softball team defeated Delaware in the opening night of the Patriot Classic on Friday at the George Mason Softball Complex.

Madison Canady's three-run home run gave Radford (7-3) its fifth run of the first inning putting the Highlanders ahead by five runs. The bottom half of the frame began with back-to-back singles from Sydney Fisher and Riley Oakes. The duo moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch and Fisher scored on the next at-bat, which was a fielder's choice where all runners were safe. After a pop out, Destiny Freeman loaded the bases with a single to left field.

Sofia Tapia drove in Oakes from third with a sacrifice fly to center field giving Radford a 2-0 lead. Then Canady stepped in and delivered a two-out bomb to left center field. The three-run shot was her second home run of the season and team-leading 10th RBI.

A strikeout ended the inning but the Highlanders left no players on base. Altogether the team only left two players on base as opposed to Delaware's seven. However, a lot of that was due to Jessie Marvin's performance in the circle. She was dealing on the rubber with six of her seven strikeouts coming from the first 11 batters.

Marvin (4-1) allowed her first run in the third inning after the Blue Hens broke through with one run on two hits. Hunter Mundy put the Highlander back ahead by five with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. The long ball was her fourth of the season and third in the last two games.

Delaware (12-4) tacked on another run with a Chayanna Gallardo solo home run that began the fifth inning. Marvin got the next three batters in order but ran into a little bit of trouble in the next frame. She exited the game with the bases loaded and one-out in the fifth. Sophomore Hannah Morris entered with the game-tying run at the dish.

Morris was able to get the second out of the inning but it allowed the Blue Hens' third run to score via sacrifice fly. Gallardo was the next batter up and delivered a two-out double to make it a one-run game, 6-5. Morris got a fly out to end the frame with the game-tying run stranded in scoring position.

Neither team got a baserunner in the sixth but Delaware got a pair of runners aboard in the seventh. Radford called on Marvin to re-enter and close out the game. She was able to get both outs herself by making a line drive stab for out number two and a fitting strikeout of Gallardo for the final out of the night.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford only left two runners on base – the lowest amount left on base in a win through the first 10 games this season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Fisher had a three-hit performance with three singles. Canady and Mundy had the only extra base hits for Radford – both home runs. Six of the nine batters in the lineup scored for Radford. Canady had the only multi-RBI game with three runs driven in. The Blue Hens had eight hits with three players tallying multi-hit games. Brooke Glanden led the way with a 3-for-3 night, while Gallardo had three RBIs.
